what's a good compilation that encompasses their best material, not from a beginner's standpoint, but someone who already digs a lot of prog.

Are you sure you dig a lot of prog?  It seems like you'd realise that the songs are only broken pieces of a whole.  Get the real albums man.

yeah I actually kinda figured that on a rip I had of In Search Of Space.

if that's the case, if I were to get two, that are in print without paying an arm and a leg, preferrably through amazon, which ones?

I enjoyed the Robert Calvert period a little more than the early period. Michael Moorcock wrote about dragons, warriors, etc.....Calvert was more interested in the future of technology. On the album "Quark, Strangeness, and Charm" the band sounds more progressive. The drummer and bassist were very tight and even though the typical Hawkwind chord progressions were present....the band did not vamp endlessly like they did on "Space Ritual". Simon House was a wonderful addition to their sound with his violin and electronic keyboards. Songs like "Days of the Underground", "Damnation Alley", "Jack of Shadows", "Free Fall" and many others were a departure from their early sound although it was still "Space Rock" and the lyrics were more crafty because Calvert was a Sci-fi writer himself. Michael Moorcock's "Chronicles of the Black Sword" was a decent concept and Huw LLoyd Langton wrote some really interesting songs of his own which are featured on many of the 80's releases.

"Levitation" is more serious in the music department for them. On many of these recordings with Langton, and just prior to that with Calvert....it seemed they were on a pathway to evolving into more of a progressive band. This process died just prior to Hawkwind becoming a 3 piece band in the early 90's. I once owned more than 65 cd's by them and I have traced their history throughout. You should buy 1 great cd from the Calvert period like Quark, Strangeness, and Charm, 1 from the return of Moorcock period in the 80's, and one of the early releases such as Warrior on the Edge of Time or Hall of the Mountain Grill. If you have 3 releases from 3 different time periods....you will have a better understanding of who they are. "Xeon Codex" is one of their best. I love the song "Sword of the East". It has a common 4/4/ beat like any rock song, but the song itself is colored well and creates an atmosphere. I wish they would write like this again.

My all time fav from Hawkwind would be 'Quark Strangeness and Charm' which is quite different from the rest of their output.

Also 'Space Ritual' and 'Hall of the Mountain Grill' are worth checking out along with 'Warrior on the Edge of Time'.

For a compilation which isn't too bad - a good focus on the 70s - see below, while some tracks are edited versions, it does have a few interesting non-album tracks from memory

With such a vast discography, Hawkwind can be a difficult band to discover. "Space ritual" for example is a live album, so it is listed among a myriad of poor quality rehashings of other live recordings.

The studio albums are the obvious place to go for most of their work, but if you're looking for a decent summary, the 3CD "Epocheclipse" set is very good.

I find that Space Ritual is a really, really good introduction to the band. It's a live album, sure, but it's heavy as hell and has got a great selection of their early material. Plus you've got Rob Calvert, Lemmy, and some poetry from Michael Moorcock to spice things up - all the ingredients of their classic period.

Khan is very good(great Steve Hillage)but I prefer Hall Of The Mountain Grill with its outstanding songs such as Paradox,You'd better believe it,Wind of Change and The Psychedelic Warlords(disappear in smoke).A true classic like In search of space.

I really enjoy everything hawkwind did up to "Church of Hawkwind" but my favorite period is the space Rock period from
"In Search of Space" to Warriors on the Edge of Time"
I use to go watch Hawkwind alot in the late 70,s and through the 80,s but i kind of got a bit bored of seeing them playing live because the just got to samey, nearly every track was played to  fast and in the same style that they adopted when playing live during the eighties, I saw them again around 2004 and they still sounded the same.

there hayday for playing live and sound ing like they do on the records was the "Space Ritual tour" they were amazing then

Warriors on the Edge of Time has had the most success turning people onto them for me.

Like Toddler says you should start with one album from each period!  I like all their albums up to Levitation when I lost the plot but continued to see them live occasionally.

Hall of the Mountain Barbecue or Warrior on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown are both great but Warrior is a bugger to get hold of (good luck).

Space Ritual is for Hawkwind fans the classic Live album but some prog types dislike it (It is however essential in anybodies record collection as it is a blast and there is nothing else like it)

I listen more to the Calvert era these days and any of Quark, Strangeness or Astounding Sounds or Hawklords are all great.  Especially the latest extended releases.  My favourite of these is the Hawklords.

Then get Levitation and fill in the gaps if you still like them.

Help me I'm falling!

I go on a hawkwind binge at least once a year. Tremendous fun. Calverts 'Captain Lockheed.....' is worth getting if you find you have a liking for the band

Make sure you check out Palace Springs in addition to the 70's recommendations.
I also think "It's the Business of the Future to Be Dangerous" is good music by
them that is unlike most of their other stuff.

Electric Tepee is also great and not a likely recommendation.

'1999 Party' is a more genuine live experience than 'Space Ritual', which has loads of overdubbing - all of Lemmys bass I suspect. Still, a good album is a good album, and the transition into 'Master of the Universe' at loud volumes is mind blowing.

I'd sell  someones Grandmother for a 75 or 77 soundboard with Robert.Smile
