A bit of a frustrating band to me. Their second album is near brilliant, but the rest of their discog does very little for me. Although I do like Repeat when I'm in that mood (aside from varispeed which is terrible). The recording quality doesn't help either (mostly talking of their first album here).

What? No, the sound quality is not to be discussed. It's simply that they made some choices about their sound which may noy satisfy everyone.
The first LP is hard to get into, but I think it's most due to the fact that nearly all the tracks are instrumental and focus rather on atmospheres and, well, the perception of sound/sounds than on "classical" way of writing songs.

I've enjoyed what I've heard from the group so far, eventually I want to get their box set.

The box set? It's the kind of items I've always seen as "stuff for dedicated fans". Since I already own the first LP and the Peel Sessions (and a CD-R copy of Deceit), I think I will have their other material one record after another.

But I will take the Camberwell Now compilation without hesitation. Even if there's only Charles Hayward in this band, I tend to see this group as a continuation of what This Heat began with Deceit, a more "melodical" approach of music.

Well I don't own any This Heat yet, so the box would be the best way for me to go, I think.  I've listened to albums on Grooveshark, so I'm fairly sure I'll enjoy everything, it's just a matter of wanting to spend that much money.

Oh but it is. Deceit, Made Available, Repeat all sound quite nice sonically. Forgive me, but the sound quality of an album plays an important role for me. Now if you are saying they choose to make it sound poor, then my goodness that was stupid on their part.

PS I like, even prefer, instrumental music.
