I remember when a friend bought Tarkus , '71, and we  went back to his apt ...uh...imbibed a little and then played it and we were a bit let down by it except for the Tarkus track itself. I actually like Trilogy and BSS better....it really comes down to personal likes in the end.
 
Please don't get me started on all the lousy lp's they made later.
 
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Both the first album and Tarkus are great. But, I'd go with the first one. Then, get Tarkus.
