Everyone's telling you to jump over to A Pleasant Shade Of Grey (APSoG), but...I think you'll find it off-putting if you fast-forward to that album.
 
My favorite FW albums are a tie between Perfect Symmetry and Parallels. PS is more "metal" while Parallels is more refined and very melodic. The songwriting on Parallels is fantastic. And it's the next album in their discography, so go there.
 
After that, they released Inside Out, which contains the stunning "Monument," which is certainly one of the best songs they ever recorded. Overall, a very good album just behind the previous two.
 
You also want to hear No Exit, the album before Perfect Symmetry which introduced Ray Alder on lead vocals. Prog metal without keyboards.
 
APSoG is a conceptual album-length work which is more of an acquired taste. They had balls for recording it instead of selling out to the nu-metal masses.
 
Disconnected was alright at first but I haven't listened to this in a long time. FWX, same deal. Someday I'll revisit those two.

I thought Rob (Ron?) Jarzombek had taken over drum duties. I'm pretty sure Zonder won't come back.

My top would be:
A Pleasant Shade of Gray
Parallels
Perfect Symmetry
No Exit

And yes, the Arch/Matheos album is amazing - one of the best of the year.

I was pretty certain of Fates Warning releasing a new album in early 2013, but unfortunately there's a complete lack of details on the internet, especially on their website. Therefore it's not currently clear whether FW is still writing, recording, or other such preparations. It's also not clear what the lineup will be; I definitely agree that having Zonder in on this would make for some killer drum tracks. In fact, Zonder's probably one of the main reasons why I would look into this album, along with Ray Alder's vocals and Jim Matheos' brilliant guitar work. I would love it if Fates Warning could create another masterpiece like A Pleasant Shade of Gray or Disconnected, as I'm a big fan of this more recent sound development. Sure hope it turns up in 2013 Smile

yeah see!! Oh man I hope your right!! 2013!! That would make my year!!! Anyway, a great band like Fates with a Killer discography shouldn't go out with the album FW 'X'. Ya just can't! That album was a mediocre effort.

The proggiest Fates Warning? I think after the first few albums (full of the Iron Maiden sound), the band's progressive nature completely took off, and since No Exit I'd say they've kept up the solid reputation of a true prog metal band. If I had to put all their albums on a scale of "progginess," it would probably go something like this:
 
Night on Brocken - 4.0
The Spectre Within - 6.5
Awaken the Guardian - 7.5
No Exit - 8.5
Perfect Symmetry - 9
Parallels - 8.5
Inside Out - 8
A Pleasant Shade of Gray - 9.5
Disconnected - 9
FWX - 7
 
My personal favorites are Disconnected, A Pleasant Shade of Gray, and Perfect Symmetry, although I love nearly every album in the Fates Warning discography. These guys are geniuses!!

Perfect Symmetry, Awaken The Guardian and Disconnected are my three favourites and they are all so different from one another.  I'm a fanboy so i do enjoy them all but i would say that there's nothing really similar to Perfect Symmentry by this band.

A Pleasant Shade of Grey is the highlight of the 90's if you are looking for their most "progressive" album of that period.
 
Awaken the Guardian should be your 80's choice if you are looking for really adventurous riff-driven prog/power metal, by far the best album with Arch (but no better than Perfect Symmetry IMO).

I know!! It's brilliant. What do you think of THE IVORY GATE OF DREAMS? For me, it's one of their best songs for sure. It's also a song that really defined progressive metal in general. So many great bands learned a lot from Fates When they were at their proggiest. ;)

Just fantastic, I prefer their latter works but it is one of the highlights of the '80s Metal to me Smile

I always found 90s FW quite boring. It's not by playing dissonant notes and odd signatures that you'll get a good prog album. Go with Awaken the Guardian! It has Jon Arch on vocals, good Iron Maiden influences and it's the one that really progresses from the typical 80s heavy metal sound IMO.

Thanks for the Arch/Metheos mention.  I was listening to tons of FW back
in 2003 to around 2005 and it's good to hear this same voice again doing
new things.  I had no idea this album existed.

^^ oh great albums for sure!! I just feel both Parallels and Inside out aren't albums that demonstrate the peak of their proggiest performances, although they are both great albums and really showed another side of Fates that they could commercialize their sound a bit. Definitely Fates's most accessible albums. How can anyone not love MONUMENT!!!

I would suggest Inside Out which is a very good album with great atmospheres because I think that it is the nearest one to Perfect Symmetry for its sound, but my favourite overall is Parallels.
