Both awesomely masterpieces of fusion, both ECM releases - from 70s and 80s - two best decades of ECM.

David Torn.  I heard this first as a pre-release promo and was immediately struck by the innovation, moving jazz fusion into new territory - which BLUE revisited quite some ime later. I was already a Torn fan from deep exposure to his tape loops and other experimental techniques for guitar I first heard on the Everyman Band album, Without Warning - which also shifted jazz fusion into new directions - and I mustn't forget his session work with Jan Garbarek.

 

Rypdal's Whenever,  I've only become familar with in the last 3 years - when I have already got my favourites, Chaser, Hit SIngles, Vossabrygg. I still hear (and greatly revel in) that Hank to Hendrix thing f Rypdal.

Nice poll involving a couple of classy albums.I had to go with Terje's album though. It's ironic that one of the songs on Torn's album called "The Delicate Code" has some guitar that reminds me of Terje's playing. These are two very interesting records.

Don't know David Torn so no vote but i'm realy keen on Rypdal.......the first six albums, so this one Thumbs Up

Two really good albums I wouldn't be without.  Stylistically not too similar though.  I give the edge to Cloud for having a little more diversity in the compositions.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

About Rypdal, didn't know this live version, a bit faster than the studio one but very good...Torn is very interresting, thanks for the link

Do you like Best Laid Plans (ECM 1984) by David Torn (el. guitar, synths) and Geoffrey Gordon (percussions)? I love so much that dark and trippy but underrated album.
