I feel like TMV are a controversial band in the realm of prog, seeing that people tend to lean towards extreme opinions about them. People seem to think that they're either on the cutting edge of prog rock and pushing the boundaries where no one else has before, or they think that the band is complete and utter self-indulgent dribble/noodling. I'm somewhere in the middle, having loved the first two albums, liked the 3rd and 4th, and could not get into the 5th except for 1 or 2 songs.
This band has had some extremely talented musicians play on the records and at live shows including Jon Theodore (drums on first 3 albums), Thomas Pridgen (drums on 4th and 5th albums), Deantoni Parks (current drummer), Juan Alderete (Bass), John Frusciante (contributing rhythm and lead guitar on every album thus far), Flea (contributing bass and trumpet), Larry Harlow (piano and clavinet on Frances the Mute), Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (duh), and the list really just goes on and on... So whether you like the material or not, TMV deserves major props in the musician department. I wanted to see what the feeling towards these guys is amongst you PA dwellers. I discovered TMV at the same time I was just getting into Yes, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, and jazz when I was 14. TMV was my favorite band then, but I hardly ever listen to them now. The lead vocals from Cedric Bixler-Zavala are starting to annoy me on the latest releases and they never should have parted ways with Jon Theodore IMO. My favorite album is a tie between De-Loused and Frances. Does anyone know anything about the upcoming album? I'm willing to give them another chance. De-Loused. IMO their albums kept on getting weaker as their carrer progressed, however their 1st 3 albums are all masterpieces

TMV is my favorite band to form in the 2000s, and in my top five favorite bands overall. I voted De-Loused.

"exoskeletal junction at the railroad delayed" Although each of their albums has its own merits, De-loused is easily my favorite. Octahedron probably comes in second for me. It was such a radical shift from Bedlam and showed how versatile TMV is. Any thoughts on how Octahedron will be seen when fans look back on Mars Volta’s work years from now? |

De-Loused in the Comatorium. Sadly after the second album, they dropped significantly in quality. Bedlam has it's moments though, but overall average at best.

De-loused followed closely by Octahedron and Amputechture. I'm really looking forward to the next album, it's going to have some fantastic stuff on it. I saw them play the material probably in its entirety a while ago.

De-loused is their best album by far and I can't see them doing any better than it. I think they've kept a pretty steady quality grade throughout their albums, but I also agree they have slowly degressed with the incredibleness of their albums.

I got to see the Omar Rodriguez-Lopez group in Houston a few months back and Cedric Bixler came on stage completely unannounced. I'm assuming what I heard there was a preview of the new TMV album, because instead of hearing Omar Rodriguez solo album-sounding stuff, the stuff they played with Bixler pretty much sounded just like a TMV album. Musically, it was f*cking mind-blowing, what with Deantoni Parks absolutely killing it on the drums. My only problem was when Bixler and Rodriguez would sing. Sometimes it sounded so bad, it was embarrassing. No vocals necessary guys! I wish with all my soul that TMV would just cut an instrumental album already. ![]() |

I thought the vocals were great on De-Loused in the Comatorium and Frances the Mute. They were powerful, bluesy, and showcased Bixler's extreme range of notes. Something about the vocals on Amputechture and every album since just rubs me the wrong way. They sound weak, nasally, and sometimes just immature and silly for a guy approaching 40. You can't hit notes like that forever and it's been apparent since Amputechture. Edited by EchidnasArf - August 08 2011 at 02:48 |

Frances is my favourite album ever. It's mind-blowing.
Followed by Amputechture, and then Deloused. |

Deloused is an overrated Indie album with prog tendencies, Frances The Mute is one of the most innovative and enjoyable albums ever. I don't understand why Frances isn't more highly regarded.

All five studio albums got a solid four stars from me. For me, that makes The Mars Volta a five star band- in other words, essential to a prog music collection.

I respect them as very creative and talented musicians, but their music does nothing for me. I've listened, but no. Don't have any of their albums.
