I use Spotify pretty much every day.  I subscribe to Spotify Premium, which is £9.99 a month.  This allows me to stream music through my iTouch which I have connected to a high quality docking station in my sitting room.  I have a good quality high speed, limitless broadband connection (Virgin Media) so I can stream at the highest quality.  I build up massive playlists (Prog, Jazz, Classical) and listen to them using the shuffle function.  I think the service is quite brilliant and worth every penny.  However, I still buy CDs (about 10 a month on average).

> I recall reading somewhere that even Lady Gaga received a payment of less than $200 last year for all the plays of her music on Spotify.

Apparently that story was a bit misleading, it concerned some early royalties, and she generally does get a lot more than that. Nevertheless, independent artists are looking at very small amounts of money, fractions of a cent for each stream.

I did notice and I transfered it to my playing lists. Going through the pieces I haven't heard right now. Thanks for your effort. Thumbs Up  Really appreciated.

I subscribe to Spotify as I use it every day at work, but rarely at home as I prefer my CDs and LPs.

It's not a bad service, the biggest problem is that a lot of stuff is unavailable on it. There's no Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa or AC/DC just to mention a few and a lot of discographies are incomplete (like Porcupine Tree's discography, nothing pre-In Absentia is available.. so no Sky Moves Sideways, Signify etc.). Still, using Spotify to explore new stuff while at work is a good investment at 50 NOK a month.

It took awhile before Spotify was available in Belgium, but since a few months I can use it too, and I'm very happy with it.
It's such a great site, and even when a lot of music is missing, I can get well acquainted with a lot of albums that I wanted to check out.

I wanted to try Spotify but it requires a Facebook login, and I don't have a Facebook :(

Oh well, back to sketchy Grooveshark.

Really? I subscribed to Spotify before I had an FB account.  Maybe it's different for the US.

Facebook is rather a necessity if you're my age (18) unfortunately. I wish I could be rid of it really, but it's pretty integral to all this social malarkey LOL....

You're lucky you have the pleasure of 'opting out', I suggest you stay as far away as you can!

On the subject of Spotify however, in the UK you don't need a facebook account, only for social integration, which just means letting people judge you for listening to something other than The Red Hot Chili Peppers/The Killers/yougetthepicture....

That being said however, it's my program of choice for trying before I buy, and I'm not sure I would have been so adventurous musically without it.

Indeed!

Spotify is a great way to check out albums to find out which ones to buy and which ones to not, IMO. It's also an adequate way to listen to the albums you want to buy, but haven't required yet, but it's not as good as having your own copy of the album, of course.

I'm only 21, and I deleted by Facebook from my teen years because I feel like avoiding everyone I've ever known from high school. Also, I get to say I don't have a Facebook, which is pretty sweet.

But I do think the Facebook requirement for Spotify is a US thing, which is ridiculous. Thus, Grooveshark.

^It's not a US thing. It's the same here.

I don't use FB either, though, and I signed up for Spotify before having a FB acount became a requirement.
