Topic: Chris Squire's Best Yes Album Posted: January 14 2012 at 20:54 |
Easily Close to the Edge, his baselines on the title track are flawless, well executed and written. Sparse and never to showy, the bass on Total Mass Retain is just speaker melting.

Easilly. I think that all of Squire's basslines are great on this album.

He is one of the more consistently good Yes players (staying in the band probably helps).
I love how his bass tone gradually changes over the course of the albums; from crunchy, trebley riffages on Fragile, to deep, fretless warbles on Tales, fat, groovy slapping on Relayer, and back to the Fragile-sound on Drama. I'll give a sympathy vote for Tales: have people forgotten the intense bass solo on Ritual??

Which album isn't his best?
I'll go with Relayer. I'd say the whole band was at its prime at that time.

It's really hard to say... I couldn't choose one but his playing of TFTO is phenomenal as well as Fragile and Relayer.

I voted with the vast majority for Fragile. CTTE and Drama prob come in second and third. God help me, Tormato might be fourth.

He was good in everything, but Fragile is the one.

However outstanding his bass playing on Fragile might be, I have to vote for Close to the Edge because of his work on the title track.
