i could not believe my eyes when i was looking thru jazz dvds at a local cd/dvd store today, and staring back at me was a new dvd of the original lineup of the Mahavishnu Orchestra doing a concert in Paris from 1972! Could not afford to pick it up on the spot, but have it on hold until i can.
Don't see it listed yet in PA, but man, i am looking forward to this-anybody seen this yet?

Maybe some success with this dvd will encourage them to do (dare I say) a reunion tour.  They are all still alive and still some what active.  Come on guys bury the hatched and tour, please.

It blows me away that MVO used to appear on the TV concert shows back in 1973-74 all the time!  I was just a freshman in college and beginning my long road as a rock/prog guitarist, so I devoured everything I could find on McLaughlin's doubleneck Gibson & custom "Rainbow" guitars!

GREAT stuff, thanks for posting Doug!  p.s. I just got a new copy of the remastered "In The Can," so watch your mailbox!

I picked up a... *looks around*... BOOTLEGCool at a guitar show entitled Mahavishnu Orchestra - Germany '72 & USA '73, and let me tell you, it is fantastic! It was only $10. There's almost always a guy at every guitar show I've been to with a booth overflowing with bootleg DVDs of just about any band you can think of.

I'm sure your MO DVD will be just as good if not heaps better in terms of audio/video quality. Let us know how it is!

myself, i have already  the Mahavishnu Orchestra Live at Montreux 1974/1984
the 84 section does not really do anything for me, but the 1974 footage is breathtaking!

Hi!
I have seen the Mahavishnu Orchestra Live in France 1972 dvd in it's entirety, and have mainly great things to say about it!
this is the original MO lineup, and the tracks are:
 01 Intro                                             05 One World
02 Meeting Of The Spirits                   06 Resolution
03 You Know, You Know                     07 Sanctuary
04 The Dance Of Maya                        08 Awakening

the main menu is divided into   Play        Tracks            and    Audio
the audio options are   Dolby Digital 2.0 and   Dolby Surround 5.1

The French announcer at the intro introduces them as their first time in France, "Mahavishnu Band"

the not so good part first-the video and audio are not really much above bootleg quality
the picture is grainy and even has some lines in it in parts, and the sound could be better

but what really makes this dvd work, is the band!
You get a hands on idea of why these musicians were so exhilarating and exciting live, and to see the original lineup doing it is really fantastic, despite the dvd's technical imperfections
there are uniquely endearing "you had to have been there" moments, like when Jerry Goodman tries soloing on his violin by playing it like a guitar! It is really cool when John introduces the "brother members of the band", and before one of the subsequent numbers, John intros by saying that it is "a standard of the band", and showcases the drummer and bass player, it being not on their first album, where most of the music originates in this concert.
Though the audience is not that responsive, it is not the band's fault, as they light a fire onstage, and really cook!
We are given a fairly lengthy Billy Cobham drum solo about two thirds of the way through the show, which is a thrill to follow, but the real highlight is John McLaughlin himself, playing that double neck guitar of his so incredibly
If you can get past the average picture and sound quality, and you like the early band, this is a must (especially for someone like myself who never witnessed them live)
I will be returning to this dvd, that is for sure
hearing and seeing this makes me wish there was such a thing as a Dzyan with Eddy Marron dvd, oh, well, can't have everything thing your own way!
