Topic: maudlin Of The Well vs. Kayo Dot Posted: September 28 2011 at 01:13 |
If this poll's been done tell me.
Well what you think? I've been leaning towards maudlin for a long time, but I just listened to Kayo Dot's latest literally about 10 times in a row. It blew my mind to shreds. With that maudlin's entire discography is great, but I'm going to go on Kayo Dot just because their latest is probably my favourite Toby Driver album so far.

So far I've failed to be very impressed by anything I've heard from either group - I've tried both on multiple occasions, and I have Coyote and Part the Second (who doesn't have that one? ) but to be honest neither would get more than a 3 star rating from me at the time being. No vote.

I honestly cannot choose. I could listen to both of there discographies on repeat for the next couple of days, and over analyze everything they ever recorded.... and still have no idea which I like more. Essentially Kayo Dot is the same band anyway, If they would've kept there name as MOTW, we'd probably still have all the same great albums.

^ true and not true. Kayo Dot is more of a motW 2.0, more mellow I guess... Well the first album's pretty maudlin-y but the rest is pretty different sonically.

Yeah, but Driver said it was just the evolution of the band. They were heading in that direction anyway, who knows though, they lost a fair share of members, Driver had to contribute more, and Kayo Dot is really his machine.

The difference between the two for me is akin to a moderate change in musical direction within one band. I think the only reason Driver changed the name is because he didn't want the same fanbase judging the band on what MOTW had previously released. It gave him a bit of breathing space.
That said, I love them both, but I think Maudlin are the most consistant, so I shall vote for them, but really there's nothing in it.

maudlin of the Well have produced 2 albums I consider to be 5 masterpieces and two further excellent albums. Kayo Dot have produced 3 albums that I rate 5 , including probably the greatest album of all time and a further excellent album and EP. KD it is. And te two bands arent effectively the same, Driver has said that he found the concept of maudlin... (creating music through astrasl projection) to have been taken as far as it could go and so decided to end the band and make a big jump in a new direction, resulting in Kayo Dot.

Yes this poll's been done before, but who cares, it's a good one.
I really like maudlin of the well - it's a band.
Kayo Dot is mostly Toby Driver solo and it's so morose and often bores the living bebuddha out of me. There's still some good stuff but maudlin is so much better to me.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

^ They had good growls too, one of the few bands with growls which I'd actually call beautiful.

Kayo Dot, because I just like the direction Toby has taken lately with both KD and Tartar Lamb. Coyote is the best work among all motW and KD records.

1. Choirs of the Eye (KD) 2. Coyote (KD) 3. Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue (KD) 4. Bath (motW) 5. Part the Second (motW) 6. Blue Lambency Downward (KD) 7. Stained Glass (KD) 8. Leaving Your Body Map (motW) 9. My Fruit Psychobells... (motW)
To me, Kayo Dot has progressed miles beyond motW. IMHO maudlin was one of the greatest metal bands ever, whereas Kayo Dot is the greatest thing ever!

maudlin of the Well for me. Can't really explain why too much, as I love Kayo Dot too, as alienated as I was by them before. I can't name a single moment of motW's entire discography that I don't absolutely love, and while I could easily say the same for Choirs of the Eye, the level of excellency isn't quite as consistent as KD's career continues.

I like the subtle spookiness of Kayo Dot albums much more than any of the material on motW albums.

Neither thrill me at all, but I'll go with Maudlin of the Well. Part the Second is not bad, it actually some some beautiful music on it.

Coyote is the best prog album ever and Stained Glass is pretty perfect to so Kayo Dot while still acknowledging motW is pretty damn good.
