I recently got this album and I must say I am impressed. I think that there's hardly a weak track on this album. I'm still trying to decide how to define it in my head. It has metal elements, but that's not really the focus of the sound. Yes, there are screamed vocals, but the HUGE, almost symphonic, sound of the album makes me want to define it as a symphonic sort of metal. Which I believe is far off from what Symphonic metal actually is, but I wouldn't know!
My fave tracks would likely be Earth Day, Deep Peace, Canada, and Nobody's Here.

Devy is his own animal. Terria is one of his best. Ocean Machine and Synchestra will likely appeal to you too. Earth Day is the one song that captures Devy maybe better than any other single song.
The solo section of Deep Peace I'd put up there with any guitar solo in prog history including Firth of Fifth (especially since the meat of that solo was written by Banks anyway.) Edited by Negoba - October 06 2011 at 12:44 |

Current Listening:
Heater valve kicking on. Snotty noses being blown. Griping. Maybe cookies coming out of the oven??? C is for cookie, and it is good enough for me. |

I was blown away by the album too. From what I've listened to of his stuff, I'd say it's his masterpiece. I really don't have a favorite track because I think the album works so well as a whole.

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd just bump this one, as I'm currently interested in giving Devin Townsend a try. "Terria" looks like a good place to start, but I'm open to suggestions.
The catch is, I don't really like metal, or prog-metal, all that much. I do love experimental and post-metal though. Vocal-wise, screamed vocals do not sit well with me at all (otherwise I'd LOVE Neurosis), but growled or shouted vocals are ok. I love power chords, spacious arrangements, high concept stuff, and stuff that flirts with the avant garde. Boris and Harvey Milk are two of my favorite bands, if that helps. Any ideas?

I haven't listened to any of his music, but i'm sure that his most recent album, Ghost, is supposed to be more laid-back and atmospheric.
