There's much love for Eldorado I see - I like some of the songs, but there's this recurring orchestral theme that pops up throughout, and it's cheesy in my books and turns me off the album. My sister still has her LP of it from decades ago.

I love ELO II - it has longer cuts over all, a dark, murky production that suits the songs well, and my fave tracks. The debut, On The Third Day and Time are also much loved by me. The others I can live without, though they have some nice things peppered throughout.

Yep...the second one is also my favorite though I like No Answer also.
On The Third Day and Eldorado are also nice but after that imho they went for pop rock.
... And great pop rock at that!

Debut/No Answer is pretty much perfect to my ears.

Time & On the Third Day are near perfect too except that they contain one of their worst hits each: Ma-Ma-Ma Belle and Hold on Tight.

Eldorado is mostly a magical mystery tour but music just don't get much worse than Illusions in G Major.

If you like these the rest of their uneven albums 1970-1981 (the Xanadu-OST is a possible exception) are all worth having imo. You'll easily find them all on vinyl extremely cheap.

El Dorado or Out of the Blue are their best.

Their proggiest is probably On The Third Day.

I am a fan of their earlier music. I'm pretty familiar with anything prior to and including A New World Record. The first album is very good, not as commercial as the latter stuff. The earlier albums are not as accessible or commercial as the latter stuff, but there is some really good music all around, even on the earlier records. I'd first recommend a good g hits cd. But I'm sure that most of them won't include Roll Over Beethoven from II, which is one of my fav. versions of that ubiquitous song. I'll place them in the order that I would buy them, obviously this is my taste, but I hope it helps you some. I'd get- A) I, B) A New World Record, C) Face The Music, D) Eldorado, and then II & On The Third Day. I hope this helps some. Take care.Approve

Time is a near-perfect album, and one of the best of any band, let alone ELO. While not a groundbreaking peace of art like Sgt. Pepper's or Highway 61 Revisited, you'll find few albums that have as much emotion, talent, and complexity poured into them as Time. The story is strong --with it being more about love and longing than just a guy being transported into the future. I'll probably never get tired of listening to it from start to finish.

Time is a very eighties album, and actually stands up well against any ELO release, but it still doesn't come near to Face The Music and Eldorado.Classics.

Let me put it this way, IŽd much rather listen to Brown Girl in the Ring and I will Survive a couple of times and end up with an oestrogen fuelled tongue in my mouth, instead of listening to Magma and ending up with a fat bearded man from Ukraine...

LOL Outstanding reply!

I also must admit to a grudging love for some disco....Steely Dan did it very well with "Aja," and some other disco incorporated some rather elegant instrumentals.  I suppose out-of-work jazz and fusion players had to make some money in the studio....

And you are right about the ladies!  Hard as hell to dance to most prog!

POTA and I thinks you are wrong.

Although I don't really find the story strong. My favorite song Yours Truly 2095 has one of the silliest lyrics in popular music - but the whole concept is wonderful and works magnificently.

El Dorado probably. A New World Record and Face the Music are great but couldn't get into them as much as into El Dorado that is a masterpiece.
I shook my head and smiled a whisper knowing all about the place

For most of my life "Out Of The Blue" was always a single album, as my inherited copy only had side 3 and 4.
I've since heard the album in full... And prefer it as just side 3 and 4! Tongue (Although "Turn To Stone" is still magnificent)

No, not in the same manner. Absolutely two different bands.

best ELO album. sh*t...  could be any number of 4 or 5 albums... they were were a great group that had a decades worth of great albums.

in terms of the site... I'd go with On the Third Day. Thumbs Up Strong from start to beginning and with prog enough for anyone who doesn't have a prog elitist streak in them.

Though ELO 2 will always be a top 10 alltime fav prog album, but that is likely more for sentimental reasons as it was likely my first exposure to 'prog', even though it is a frickin great album in its own right.
