It was not the first sign that the whole thing was going wrong ... but it was when people knew the music was not happening, and some of the folks around it, were not happening either.  The music stagnated because of the hippy thing and the media dump and trash show, and then no one in California was standing up for anything meaningful ... almost all of them were trying to cash in like everybody else!

It was getting bad in California, with too many drugs and too much of too much anything ... and the way it was handled in Santa Barbara? ... and it became ... you get into it, or you are not cool ... and that's when you knew that it was dead and gone, and not a thing in all that music meant anything to anyone! Nobody gave a cahoot! It was all crap and meaningless and just an excuse to get laid or stoned!

Sorry ... not all of us were out of it! And a lot of the music MEANT A LOT for me, and SPOKE for me, but most of it was not in California anymore, but in Europe. Even the Grateful Dead became a bad joke! And I still talk about it, in case you have not noticed. The California heyday for music ended with that concert. It also took a lot of wind off the festival years and big concerts for quite sometime!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

"Toscanini, Unreleased"-is quite good, if you are interested in the great conductor. It has unreleased audio and video of Toscanini, as well as interviews with family members, Furtwangler's wife, etc.

Probably also already seen by most, but the 1970 Isle Of Wright doc could not be missing in this thread, with its performances from The Who, ELP, Tull, Procol Harum etc, and of course all the drama about the economics of the festival.

Hi,

Altamont -- About the infamous concert. It is also a really good look as to how bad and corrupt things had gotten in California. You could tell that the "wrong" people were in charge of the music and "bringing it to the public". Seeing Marty Balin get his face smashed in, and then the othe rincident is not something that makes you feel good, and this film lets you have it.

Let it Be -- Probably one of the best, and saddest documentaries ever, and I wanna know why his jerk'ness or Yoko are not allowing this film to be remastered and released. It is magnificent in every minute of it. The bad side of it, is that the bootlegs had AT LEAST another hor of material that could be added to the film to make it better, more interesting and fun ... but nooooooo ... gotta hide John getting mad at his fellow Beatles and George getting mad ... if you want me to play I will play and if you don't I won't! ... moments that makes them PEOPLE instead of rock stars! I don't think that we will see this in our lifetimes because of the jerks and robbers, stillLOL surrounding the Beatle stuff and the fact that Paul and Ringo don't give a damn anyway ... their "star-hood" is better and more important!

I've not seen "Altamont" but own the Rolling Stones "Gimme Shelter".  How would you compare the two?  Gimme Shelter leads me to the same conclusion you mention.  The scene in Stone's attorney Melvin Belli's office as the decision is debated between Golden Gate Park, Sears Point Raceway, and ultimately Altamont Speedway just reeks of greed and self serving promotion.  In one scene, the Grateful Dead arrive by helicopter for their set and find out Marty Balin got punched in the face by an angel and that they're beating people with pool cues.  They turn right around, board the heli and fly away!  Another fascinating scene occurs when the Stones are being lead to their trailer and a fan breaks through and punches Jagger saying it's his fault that the violence is out of control because he hired the angels.  Oh ya, my cousin was a hells angels "pledge" and was on a bus that is shown for a couple seconds in the film.  He told me that him and the other pledges were all told to hang out in the angels bus and wait in case they were needed to help with security.  He said they never left the bus.

Let it Be...the disintegration of the most popular band in the world before our very eyes.  This is the possibly the saddest music film I've ever seen...make it the saddest film period because it was real.  To see them pushing through when the magic had gone is heart wrenching...it was like watching someone slowly drown and knowing there was nothing you could do to help them.  I wasn't aware of the issues you mention with a remaster or rerelease but it doesn't surprise me.

A similar case is for my other fave music documentary.  The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.  The bit with The Who doing "A Quick One While He Was Away" did appear in the 1979 Who movie "The Kids Are Allright" but it wasn't until the late 90's that Mick finally gave the ok to let it see the light of day...guess he figured at that point it couldn't hurt his career.  I love the Jethro Tull clip with Tony Iommi miming the guitar part.  He really looks like he's miserable LOL
