http://www.darkquarterer.com/ http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Dark_Quarterer/2502#band_tab_discography Dark Quarterer is an Italian band created during the 70's, but did not officially release anything until 1987. The band's first two albums are highly regarded among the Epic Heavy Metal and Doom communities, with some even calling Dark Quarterer the "Italian Manilla Road". The third album "War Tears" saw the band start to branch out into Progressive waters, and leave the Doom behind. The Progressive leanings were even more pronounced on 2002's Violence, culminating in the current sound, which can only be described as Epic Progressive, on their latest long player, Symbols http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eh1gCGdUerc&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIu0WUEeB8o&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt3vPofumbI&feature=related Edited by The Boner - October 16 2011 at 23:19 |

This is certainly a band with a fair bit of history, yet they only released five albums in 35 years. Their sound is pretty full-on for what was only a three-piece for their first four albums. It wasn't untill 2008's "Symbols" album that keyboards were introduced, and the band evolved into a four-piece.
The band's biography, copied from the site: http://www.graspop.be/2010/nl/bandsInfo.php?&id=387: "The band’s origins date back to the early 1970s, when, under the name of “Omega
Erre”, the trio made up of Gianni Nepi (bass and voice), Paolo Ninci (drums) and
Fulberto Serena (guitar) spend about eight years playing hard rock covers. The
group “Dark Quarterer” comes into existence in 1980 to provide an answer to the
musicians’ own musical ideas. In the following twelve years the albums “Dark
Quarterer” and “Etruscan Prophecy” are produced. For its deeply personal
stylistic touch, the group is considered the creator of a new genre
(epic/progressive). Both albums are still cult for lovers all over the world.
When the musicians are about to reap the fruit of their work, Fulberto leaves
the band; it will take three years before the new solidality with Sandro
Tersetti, the guitarist who takes Serena’s place in the group, starts bearing
fruit. A new album comes out (“War tears”, produced in Germany), with a
different sound for the contribution of the new member, which also belongs to
that classic evergreen discography. About five years later, Tersetti also leaves
the group, and his place is taken by the then 19-year-old Francesco Sozzi who
will give a new turn to the DQ’s style. Two new albums are produced, one with
the trio line-up, the other with the contribution of Francesco Longhi at the
keyboards; he will join the band permanently in 2004. “Violence” and “Symbols”
are the titles of the two albums which come out respectively in 2002 and 2008.
The changes in line-up and record-making keep the band away from the stage;
since 2004, however, thanks to the group’s increasing stability, live-activity
has been constantly increasing and the band has taken part in many prestigious
European festivals. Live concerts have also become increasingly more frequent,
with their fans’ growing approval. This all brings to the production of the Live
DVD “Under the spell” in 2010 (a two-hour-and-a-half concert recorded in a 19th
century theatre, located in a medieval Tuscan hamlet) and for the same year at
least three more recordings are contemplated with My Graveyard Productions, a
label with which the band has been profitably linked for a few years". The band's official website ( http://www.darkquarterer.com/) has much more detailed info, but doesn't appear to have been updated for several years because it doesn't list the Symbols album in the discography. The band's myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/darkquarterer, has ten songs, seven of them being live versions, and all tracks featured are quite lengthy, ranging from 7:50 to 14:55. There is also a reverbnation page: http://www.reverbnation.com/darkquarterer, but strangely only one song, "The Blind Church" is featured. Finally some YouTube videos (one from each album, plus a couple live, but the fifth vid is repeated from the o.p., so sorry about that!) (This is the last track from the fourth album "Violence" - the only one from it I could find on YouTube). (A live version of a track from the second album "The Etruscan Prophecy"). (The final track from the very first album, played by the current line up, and lifted from the 2010 DVD "Under The Spell"). A truly great band, I loved listening to these samples (and plenty more of them on YouTube) - it's now just a case of you guys deciding if there's enough prog infused in it to merit an evaluation...!

Thanks for the samples, David. Judging based on them, this band reminds me of Rainbow, but not as progressive - and Rainbow are in Prog Related. Which in my opinions means Dark Quarterer are too far away from PA's scope.

^ I had a sneaky feeling that this might be the case - it reminded me of Iron Maiden in places, as well as Rainbow. Had a very enjoyable hour sorting through the samples though, and if I see the DVD for sale on the cheap somewhere, I might just get myself a copy!

I reckon they should be taken into consideration to be enlisted in the prog panorama. First since, as much as Iron Maiden and similar bands, they have possibly carved some signs in the Italian prog metal scene. Sometimes it is difficult to discern what is prog and what is not in the metal area just because of the complexity of the sub-genre and the huge variations in metal taxonomy. There are so many sorts of metal that one can lose him/herself in that world. DQ are quite far from trash and speed or other typical metal classes but very close to epic, whose borders easily mix up with prog metal (both typical and tech/extreme).
