But WHERE IS THE MOTHERS' FREAK OUT!?

IMO, that's the first progressive rock record... and the archives seem to agree with me

Max:

Any prog list that starts with Sgt. Pepper is okay by me!  Too often we forget that Pepper influenced Floyd's "Piper" (which they acknowledge, albeit begrudgingly), Moody's "Days" (which they acknowledge openly) and, to a lesser extent, Crimson's "In the Court" (Fripp speaks lovingly of Pepper and it's influence on both him personally and rock music generally).

Bravo to the "keeper of the keys" of that list.

Peace.

a very good one, great list, great bands, but just covers the "classic" era, i know that covering to 2004 is an impossible task and a very complex one, but, is a very nice introduction page to anyone interested in history

I've made my own (small, general) timeline. With sub-genres and important albums. For my paper for school. If you want it, send me a PM with your email adress...

ONE QEUSTION: I HAVE HEARD AND READ ON A NUMBER OF OCCASSIONS THAT THE BEACH BOYS ALBUM PET SOUNDS WAS AN INFLUENCE IN THE MAKING OF  "PEPPERS"(THE BEATLES GOT SOME IDEAS FROM IT) COULD THEY NOT HAVE GONE BACK AT LEAST TO 1965 or is that to early?

Haha, nice of someone to bump this REALLY old thread. Regardless, the Progrock timeline website is an invaluable source of info. It is highly recommended for new proggers and old ones alike. The majority of the albums discussed on the timeline are essential Prog classics

I was wondering if there was a plan for a timeline on this site, but what I was thinking was apart of the Prog Index on the homepage have the years and which albums were released then.  Browse by artist, genre, album or year.

The timeline is very nice but it's a shame it stops at 1979.

Yeah I regularly use that excellent timeline, and it features most of the key prog bands; the only band that I can see that it didn't mention was Rare Bird, who I think supplied the first album on Charisma Records, and are one of the most influential bands to prog- I reckon bands like VDGG, Quatermass, Genesis and others certainly would have been aware of Rare Bird.
