a.P.A.t.T. are an avant-prog band from the North West of England, including Liverpool. Their bio (self-written?) can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APAtT

Musically they seem to range from avant-pop whimsy through more standard avant-prog territory (if such a thing exists!) and electronic prog to pretty intense metal landscapes. They site a huge number of good prog influences (and I exclude ABBA) on their homesite http://www.apatt.com/ including;

*Mens Recovery Project *Need New Body *The Residents *Duran Duran *Olivia Tremor Control *Frank Zappa *Captain Beefheart *WEEN *John Zorn *The Beach Boys *Todd Rundgren *Slayer *Brian Eno *Mr Bungle *Of Montreal *Tortoise *Sax Ruins *Cardiacs * The Beatles *Metronomy *Gong *Khanate *Tortoise *DEVO *Dillinger Escape Plan *Gentle Giant *White Noise *Bjork *Icy Demons *Talking Heads *Brutal Truth *Aphex Twin *Black Sabbath *The Locust *William D Drake *Bonzo Dog Do Dah Band *Van Dyke Parks *ABBA *Claude Debussy * ad infinum

A couple of albums (L.P. and Black & White Mass (described as "Mad hatters tea party for avant-rock heads" on OrganGrinder)), a few EPs (including Fre(e.P.), free to download on http://apatt.bandcamp.com/album/fre-e-p), some compilations and a number of multimedia projects including Nosferatu Le Vampire commissioned by BBC Radio make up the story so far. A remix album is also available for free download on LastFM at http://www.last.fm/music/a.P.A.t.T./a.P.A.t.T.+Exclusive+LAST+FM+MIxTApe

a.P.A.t.T. are currently touring the UK as support for Secret Chiefs 3, and as someone who’s just seen them, deliver an amazing set. Well worth seeing if you get the chance (as are Secret Chiefs!) and an obvious candidate for this site. All band members seem to be equally adept at guitars, base, keyboards and drums.

Plenty of video links on the home site as well as YouTube:

A couple of more poppy numbers;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVzInctLTaA&feature=related

On that note, they were brought up in general discussions and seemingly dismissed as too pop: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=69787

While pop is certainly part of their repertoire, this band can certainly rock out. There was not much pop on their recent live set. In fact, as someone who likes extreme (prog) metal, their closing number was the most painfully heavy track I’ve ever willingly been subjected to! If they are considered too pop for avant, would crossover have a look at them?

I think they've been evaluated and rejected by the team once already, but personally I'd be more than happy to see them added. Time for a second look, methinks.

Thanks David. They seem both progressive rock and avant to me, but I don't claim any expertise in what the RIO Avant team is looking for. Are you able to raise this with your team members or does it need passing by the mods on this board first?

I've alerted the team, so the wheels are in motion. Could be a fair while before a decision's reached, but rest assured I'll be lobbying hard for these guys. Wink

According to Wiki, "The letters a.P.A.t.T. seemingly stand for nothing fixed, but might be related to the compositional and organizational philosophies involved in a.P.A.t.T.". None the wiser, myself. Perhaps it is, "A Place At The Table"?

This may havesome "avant garde" inclinations, but it's not even vaguely avant prog imo - sorry. I don't think they are prog enough for inclusion in PA at all myself, but I really don't know what the Crossover team's guidelines are - sorry couldn't be of more help.

Cleo, pleeease don't judge a.P.A.t.T. solely on those samples above. I have their album "Black and White Mass" and its impact (and progginess) is only really evident when you take it as a whole. It's a manic, constantly-shifting kaleidoscope of an album, like Mr Bungle on fast-forward. Please try and find that album before making a final decision. Also, listen to this and tell me it's not avant-prog.

Thanks guys. The difficulty in suggesting bands is finding samples to post that do justice to the band. I also have Black and White Mass, and their live show is simlarly mad (and prog!).

I understand, but we do not list a band in the DB because of one album, we list them because of the bands overall oeuvre: are they an A-P band? Not Did they do an AP album? I once listed an artist who had a lot of AP work, but not all of his discography fit, so we didn't list the rest that didn't. But that was quite a number of albums. If the one you're speaking of really sticks out maybe we could list them for that, but we should def. not list what I listened to! We have to think of what people who use the DB are looking for. If I came here looking for AP & found that, I would be pissed and feel very misled. If I were just learning the genre, I would have a very incorrect idea of what it was.

Wow, that was great! Very AP indeed! Now, if they have a whole album that sounds like that, we should list that indeed I would say! [I would want it too! :)]

I imagine that's a joke [the wink], but things have changed a lot around here over the years so maybe I'm wrong...?

^ No, as far as I know it's always been the same. One prog album is enough for addition in a prog category, but the album needs to be 100% prog.

This is a guideline of course, not a mandatory rule, so a team can reject a band with a prog album in the case of exceptional context. That's what happened with Vangelis for example. But that normally regards high profile bands, of which is not the case here.

Ah, okay - good to know. I think we should only list the prog album in the DB though, otherwise it's very misleading... Or at lease note the FACT in their BIO...

 [Must say, this place is a tad loose sometimes imo...I like professionalism in my DB info ;)]
