This. Oldfield is like listening to a Windham Hill sampler.

Hmm....I've always thought that Oldfield's music was a bit boring at times...though I do like a few of his early lp's.
Wilson's work with PT is far better imo (though it's completely different in style..) but I do think some of his solo things are a bit of a let down though Raven is a solid lp imho.

I think these artists are too different in every way to say who's "better". To me personally Oldfield is much more important though.Oldfield has a vast output including several masterpieces especially from the 70's, but he has released really bad or useless albums too. Wilson is amazingly talented musician and almost anything he's done is at least fairly good.

Since this poll was put up we've had the release of Wilson's The Raven That Refuse To Sing and Mike Oldfield's Man On The Rocks. Could they be going in such completely opposite directions even if they tried? Wilson is now the standard bearer for quality complex modern prog while Oldfield is an old relic.

Oh, and I came across this live Oldfield video recently, and I'm really digging it. I've never seen or watched Steven Wilson live though. |

I would disagree. Every album he released up to Discovery is good in one way or another. Even some later albums turned out well, such as Amarok. I like Steven Wilson, but any i enjoy Mike Oldfield far more.

If you liked Tubular Bells, then you must get the next 3 albums at least, and ASAP. |

I haven't investigated Oldfield's work past Tubular Bells, so I wouldn't vote as of now.

I think it is an unfair comparison TBH.....MO is multi dimensional and and Steve Wilson has incredible technical sounds. Not a question of beating |

Had to like both equally. Mike Oldfield for his diverse and interesting catalogue of music, same for SW. My interest is mainly with P Tree rather than his other works - I've heard some of most. However SW was P Tree for a while before the gigs and the band which became his material and their crucial arrangements.
If P Tree are no more it seems a shame Grace For Drowing was not the last P Tree album rather than the non event that is The Incident the first and only really big disappointment from P Tree IMHO. Which pretty much means SW and his cohorts put some great albums together. I think it's a worthy comparison. Oldfield's name can either mean just (sic) himself or a band (oh, that Montreux DVD...) same with SW, whether it's various entities undertaking various interests. |

Oldfield.Wilson never did anything for me. Can't say that he's bad, his music never registered with me.

I really love Wilson for being a modern prog master but I voted Oldfield, he is one of my favourite artist (as you can guess with my avatar...) and just because of Ommadawn and Hergest Bridge...
