Both in Crossover Prog, both multi-instrumentalists and both with fantastic albums. Which do you like more? I personally go with Oldfield

As a solo artist, Mike Oldfield.  I don't much care for Steven Wilson's solo output.

As solo artists, if you take PT off the table, Oldfield destroys Wilson.  If you count PT, it's a match, but I'd still take Oldfield personally.

SW is in crossover? Odd choice to me.

But, I'll go with Oldfield, even if just for Amaork and The Bells.

If one counts IEM and early Porcupine Tree as "solo" Wilson, I feel inclined for a draw.

Bigger on the inside.

I would take Wilson's two solo albums over anything Oldfield has done.Oldfield has put out a lot of crap in his career but i still listen to Hergest Ridge,Ommadawn and Tubular Bells, but only those.
So Wilson wins easily for me.

Oldfield for me. Still love his early work so much, still remember how I felt when Tubular Bells was released.

^ ^ ^ This! 5-star comment. I wondered myself, "WHY are these two even being compared?" Just because they are multi-instrumentalists?? Lame.

I would say that they are being compared because they're similar to a reasonable degree (seeing as no one's that similar to either of them), and because they're both very good.

I would say Steven Wilson because his best is very much up there with Oldfield's best (even the new stuff- Deform to Form a Star is the best standalone song I've heard this year. Which is surprising, because it's less than 10 minutes long! :-P), and imo every single one of his records (whether in No-Man, Porcupine Tree, Bass Communion, IEM, Blackfield, or any others) is at least good. Same can't be said of Oldfield, imo.

Pretty much. Wilson has the time to go beyond, though. He certainly seems in a good period.

Easy choice for me - Mike Oldfield.  Not a big fan of Wilson.

I do quite like Mike Oldfield, though, as well

Is this comparing just their solo material? Or the artists in general?

Easy call for me - Oldfield

I like PT & Grace From Drowning but Oldfield has done some of my favorite albums by anyone.
