Quite often I find that the reasons someone doesn't like prog rock, are invariably the same reasons I love it.

Most people just want simple songs about 'boy meets girl and has sex' rather than epics about Greek mytholgy, Sci-fi, history or 'elves 'n' sh*t' Converting someone to prog is a rare thing in my experience. What is more usual is that you'll find a couple of songs here and there, by a variety of more 'accessable' bands that they will think are ok, but that doesn't count as a conversion.

Converting people to prog rock is not something I ever try these days anyway.

To convert someone to prog, I prefer the Ludovico technique.

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

Another strategy is to force him to listen to twleve tone music for at least 15 minutes. After that prog will be easy listening.

Looks like he's being subjected to 'A Plague of lighthouse keepers' for the first time.

Why try to convert anyone? I think the best one can do is just play it to them if they're interested and let them decide for themselves.

I think he wants to convert this person becuase they have conflicting ideas of what kind of music they want to play in their band, and he does not want to kick the member out.

Your do not convert someone to prog, you can offer it and it will either click or not.  The reason why is irrelevant.  If everyone is on the same page and one is not then you don't have the band that you think you have in the first place.  What really needs to happen is that the rest of you need to abandon prog and convert to the wishes of the one person.

I have begun teaching a class on prog. I'm not even kidding, it's an option course that even I shocked myself by persuading my principal to let me do.

My technique, which seems to have worked pretty well, was to play Steve Vai's Bangkok/Fire Garden Suite without saying anything before hand, then basically saying there are too ways to make interesting music. One is to ram disparate elements together in a way that somehow makes sense, which we just saw with Vai. The other is to not use any recognisable elements at all and then I play them Glenn Branca's track The Ascension, which they listen to in the dark, though I give them a little help first by telling them that I don't care if they don't enjoy it, the purpose of a piece like this is to use sound to explore your own emotional range and those emotions aren't necessarily positive.

Minds were blown. They liked Vai, they didn't like Branca but seemed to enjoy having been exposed to something so alien for the sheer experience of it.

You might think I might've mentioned this class before but I really wasn't interested in a whole lot of OOH OOH PLAY THEM THE SPIRIT CARRIES ON etc.

Talk about cruel and unusual punishment.

Try that and you may get a lot of requests to leave your class.  The Whirlwind would work better as a punishment for those who get detentions.

The problem is not musical but it's about general attitude. How to convince people to be more questioning and more demanding about everything that is presented to them in this world of excessive offering.

In a way it's weird, because one would think that when offer is so huge then the public could afford to be more selective and only the best quality offerings would survive, but for some strange reason that's not the case Disapprove

Because that's even more mainstream than prog.

Do it step by step. First show him something prog-related, bands he is not so familiar with. Muse and Queen have that poppy sound but they still make some more complex songs as well. Then if he likes it at least a bit you can take him deeper into the wild forest of prog! Evil Smile

I just got Big Big Train's The Underfall Yard a couple of weeks ago, my first experience with this band and I have to say that I'm quite impressed, albums like this can be excellent hooks for introducing prog to non-proggers.

OT:

I had a similiar situation, best friends, same band, different music.
got back to school after being absent for a week, his firs comment was, "i kinda like dream theater now, i found some cool songs"

today, just a couple of years later, he is a godlike guitarist and obsessed with prog metal.

My tip is just find something you think he would like and let time and music take its toll.

oh btw, my friend was a linkin park fan-boy before my recommendation. :D
