I think he ought to be in progressive electronic if only for Heaven and Hell, Albedo 0.39 and Spiral.
btw which albums are symphonic prog? Perhaps you were thinking Heaven and Hell?

Aphrodite's Child is Symphonic IMO, becaiuse their only 100% Prog album is 666, and that's Folk oriented Symphonic, one of the first Symphonic conceptual albums.

Heaven and Hell is also Symphonic, but his solo career has many facets

I believe Prog Electronic would not fit perfectly, I go wit Eclectic or Crossover, but he has to be in a full Prog genre.

Iván.

I understand what you mean but arguably Vangelis is most well know for his progressive electronic works which are many. Some albums like the earlier albums such as Hypothesis, The Dragon and Earth obviuously don't fit but they are also less well known and came at a time when the man was still discovering his style. They are sort of proto-Vangelis works! From 1975 onwards he concentrated mainly on electronica starting with with Albedo.39, Spiral and continuing through Mask and Direct and perhaps culminating with El Greco (for me his finest work). Of course he has done other things but the synths are usually present. Mythodea is maybe one exception.

Haven't heard any of his albums, but from what I've read in this tread his music seems to be something I need to check out.

I strongly recommend this compilation album as a good place to start.

I have this in my collection even though I already own nearly every Vangelis album just because of the price and its a good collection of tracks from his most 'proggiest' period (1975-1978)

Hey Bearded Bard!
If you're looking to get some Vangelis, then there is much more to be found than 'just' his soundtrack albums. A compilation cd just might do the trick - I agree with Richard here.
But if you know what you like, then you can navigate pretty easily between at least a couple of his experiments:

The Dragon = Krautrock
Beaubourg = Avant-guarde
Hypothesis = Fusion
Heaven & Hell = Symphonic
Albedo 0.39 = Electronic

Oh and please take these monikers with a grain of salt (or two!), because just like many other great artists, Vangelis was indeed one of those who managed to blur the lines between the styles. All I can say is that he is definitely worth getting some music from.

Vangelis is the genre per se.

Isn't this the very definition of eclectic?

I guess we're back at the original purpose of this thread, which was to determine whether Vangelis would fit inside a prog category proper, which by looking at the poll results and all the different people chiming in, is an overhanging YES. The problem is however that we can't seem to agree were to put him. If you read back through the pages, there are people suggesting the electronic moniker as well as the eclectic, but deciding on which is damn near next to impossible as it turns out. Being part of the prog electronic team, I would personally rather see him under eclectic, because he did so much more than that. Like Infocat just mentioned, he is perhaps the very definition of eclectic - as I see it that is. Yes he made a couple of full fledged prog electronic albums, but then again he also made a couple of full fledged fusion ones. I think we would better honour the scope of this man's work by including him in a genre that speaks about the many different sides to his output, rather than merely focusing on a few electronic stints. But again that's just my take on it. I am just glad he is on here. We are all free to review his work, which is the bottom line.

Mask is a bit Zeuhl, too LOL. I agree about Eclectic but he may also fit in Xover which already guests Mike Oldfield.

Mask Zeuhl? I may have to give it a spin one of these days LucaLOL But again - it points a finger towards eclectic.

it's a joke, but I'm sure that if I dig enough I can find a bit of Zeuhl, too. But Invisible Connection may fit for Avant, isn't it?

There is no doubt in my mind at all he is a prog artist, and would probably fit best within either eclectic or crossover.

I consider Vangelis one of the most sincere examples of Prog musician, although I could not frame it in a specific sub-genre of Progressive, since he has played various genres of this music.

Which is why, if he was accepted as prog, rather than merely related, he would be put in either eclectic or crossover, as no other sub-genre would accept him because of the very point you make.

This, of course, is a problem when you have such criteria for inclusion in a sub-genre.
