If Genesis made a better song than this, I'd like to know what.

Add your own.

Damn...this 7/8 groove.....I could play it with my drums for hours....

The most magical song from the Genesis Gabriel era.

Personally I don't think Genesis did a better song....on second thoughts The Musical Box runs close but Cinema Show just is that wee bit more better a beautiful song!

One of my top 5 Genesis songs. I like it, but Firth Of Fifth tips the scales for first for me with Cinema Show. Both are very good songs from a very good album.

Certainly one of the best Gabriel-Era songs!

I *love* The Cinema Show.  It and Firth Of Fifth are my favorite Genesis tracks.

The Flower Kings' cover is absolutely brilliant, if you can accept that they added layers to it in their own way and didn't stick to a staunch, note-for-note cover.  And that Roine sings about Yuliet.

Dancing with the Moonlit Knight is my absolute fave, but I will agree that Cinema Show is an absolutely astonishing piece of work. I especially love the fade in at the end bringing back the Moonlit Knight riff. Great stuff indeed!

is very difficult say what is the best song of genesis, cinema show is one of my favourites, but other songs like the musical box, dancing with the moonlit..., supper's ready or the battle of epping forest are very graet too.

Cinema Show is such a good song that you can hear bits and pieces of it regurgitated in other songs later, not just Genesis/Gabriel and future prog but other music as well.

What do the lyrics mean to it? I'm curious, I know that Peter does some
pretty crazy lyrics, but what about the reference to the "chocolate
surprise" and "Father Tyresius"? Does anyone have any interpretations?

I always thought that Father Tyresius was some sort of Methuselah figure who had worked out that boy meets girl makes the world go round.

Nothing too deep about this song (lyrically )

 great track though

I rate The Lamia  slightly higher in that the opening of Cinema Show is a little light whereas the Lamia has a great start middle and finish and is also lyrically more captivating imho

How wonderful to be so profound

I remember reading way back in the deep dark 70s that it was about Romeo and Juliet going to the movies...

The Cinema Show- My absolute favourite Genesis song. If listened to enough you can memorise it note for note. I love the lyrics too - slightly mystical and yet telling a story that is easy to follow. I like how it naturally leads into "Aisle of Plenty" which is a worthy conclusion to Genesis' best album - IMO.

"Music is the Wine that fills the cup of Silence"
- Robert Fripp
