I love actors from both groups, but I thought I'd make a poll about it.

In case you are wondering what I'm contrasting:

Actors who Act are those who are different in almost every film they make.  Examples of this would include Daniel Day Lewis, Nichole Kidman, Johnny Depp, Tim Curry, and Heath Ledger.

Actors who Are are those who are just themselves in nearly every film.  Examples of this would include Morgan Freeman, Adam Sandler, Will Smith, Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson.

The first option. Sandler was fun when I was nine. Have I gotten more demanding or has he gotten worse? Both, probably.

My favorite actors are those that act in such a way as to seemingly live as their characters. Thornton did it in Sling Blade, McGoohan did it in The Prisoner, and Jack Nicholson did it in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

I'm a fan of Vincent D'Onofrio because he's excellent at playing every kind of role.

Some of the actors who are can also act, too, and quite good, but there's little demand for that.

Please don't judge a class based on Adam Sandler (though I like him).  LOL

Because he's the first person to spring to my mind when I read beyond the original post question.

Rob - I don't judge the entirety of option two on Sandler. I just prefer guys like Nicholson over guys like Will Smith. I'd take Harrison Ford over any recurring Apatow actor, and I'd definitely take the serious minded Carrey over Morgan Freeman, even if he is a legendary narrator.

Carrey is actually quite the awesome actor when he plays serious roles. Even though I always expect him to make stupid faces

Sure, but I thought the film itself sucked.

Remember, I'm not painting these actors' entire careers- just the bulk of their performances.

And the bulk of Sandler used to be 'dumb geek without social skills overcoming silly themes and saving the day with his lovable oafishness and dirty jokes'. Quintessential example? Billy Madison

Now it's 'arrogant horseface getting massive loads of sex and women because they are paid a lot of money to pretend he is witty and spectacular'. Quintessential example? Zohan.

^ but Zohan was funny, I mean in a completely-ridiculous-never-in-a-million-years kinda way

on the subject of comedic actors, what are our thoughts on Ben Stiller?  Everyone loves his dad but Ben seems to get a lot of scorn for all his good work

I liked him when he wasn't aware of his own abilities, like with Mary and Meet the Parents, but Carrey has him swamped, even on humor, with Me, Myself, and Irene. :O

Irene sucked.. that was one of Carrey's least funny films to that point, and it's when I stopped paying attention to every movie he made--  Stiller on the other hand just kept getting better; Zoolander, Parents, Tenenbaums, Tropic Thunder

Oh, I loathe Tropic Thunder with a fervent passion. I'd rather lick a cactus. I'm indifferent to Zoolander.

I'm going to listen to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind because it's been over a year since I've done so. One of my favorite films.
