I’ve seen this line from the Buggles/Yes song Into the Lens being dissed many times. I guess most people don’t know that it’s a quote from the book Goodbye to Berlin (written by Christopher Isherwood) that later was made into the musical and movie Cabaret. The full sentence reads, "I am a camera with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking."

Does it make the line better? I think it does. And the book is about life in Germany in the 1930s.
He say nothing is quite what it seems;
I say nothing is nothing
(Peter Hammill)

I didn't even know the line "I am a camera" was the cause of derision. I have never had a problem with it.

I’ve seen it quite a few times in different threads. Not recently, though, and unfortunately I’m unable to find any examples now.

I’ve never had any problems with that line myself. Maybe it’s because I knew from the start that it was a quote – not because I had read the book (I still haven’t), but because I was told so by my brother (or maybe my mother).

I'm not certain it is a quote. More a coincidence. I care not either way.

Hi,

And I like that album by Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes ... very nice stuff!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
