And, in fact, I was so taken by this detail of the Dali, and I'd not seen it much. I wanted to use it for cover art, but knew it would be nearly impossible to license, so we repainted and reimagined, but we do owe a great debt to Dali~!

This one reminds me far more of another surrealist, Carel Willink (1900-1983), with its Roman-styled sculptures and straight vertical lines. |
Hey! Awesome to see another fellow progger be a fan of Iluvatar.
I love this album, but it's too bad their album is so hard to come by.
:( | I have this and its OK, but in many ways its everything that is "wrong" with neo-prog.

I really like it, it feels like what Genesis could have done in the 80's had they not gone so commercial.

I was thinking of a couple of other albums that fit
Godley and wah's his name (10cc) ... Consequences and the couple of albums they put together ... off the wall!
Amon Duul 2 ... Dance of the Lemmings
The AD2 art work was outstanding up until the Vive La Trance cover. And the cover of Wolf City is magnificent inside out ... and very surrealistic. The album was a fold out, btw, as was the art work in Dance of the Lemmings.
Storm Thorgeson and his Hipgnosis, also were quite surrealistic in every aspect, though he liked to make it look like he was normal ... and we want our freedom! ... and which of these guys has taken the tablets?

On a side note some electronic musicians including Djam Karet did tracks for a Dali tribute album called I think they came reasonably close to interpreting some of his art into music.

The great Dali inspired many artists, other Dali influenced covers
Iluvatar - Children
Citizen Cain - Somewhere But Yesterday (could be described as 'Dali meets Gerald Scarfe')

Good call...I love those albums and think the cover goes especially well with "Mods Carve the Pig: Assasins, Toad's and God's Flesh"...outstanding and mostly unknown album.

Hi, The only issue I have with this ... Dali thing ... is that there is NOT a single piece of music I have ever heard in rock music that even comes close to the idea/concept/design of what Dali helped create with Luis Bunuel and Robert Bresson ... and saying this here, creates an impossible discussion when you have conventional music with a line in the lyric ... that everyone all of a sudden loves the idea/fantasy ... that it is surrealistic! And there is NOTHING further away from that ideal and concept than thinking that! It means you have no idea what Dali is about and that having some drawers in Gala's breast is just a stupid drunk or stoned idiot ... and that was not what all this was about ... might be, but I doubt it ... !!! It was about ... NOT THINKING ... or believing some idealistic form or concept ... (and this is where I get in trouble with some folks here ... !!!) ... that might not even be what all this was about in the first place, but us armchair quarterbacks and intelligenzia, think that the artists that did all this are a bunch of idiots because we know better than them! One could say, that FAUST has many elements that fit, specially in the sound effects portions ... but when it came to the same beat, or note, and just changing of the sound here and there on the potentionmeter, or LFO or BSO ... then we no longer have it. Earlier Heldon, would fit to a point. The Dutch Supersister's first 2 albums had some fun stuff. Aphrodite's Child's 666 was almost totally surealistic, specially the long cut that ends it all, and just throws it all in your face ... like saying, just get drunk and have fun, and who cares! The closest classical piece for me, would be Stravinsky with "The Rite of Spring"! AND there is no rock band that will EVER do anything with that kind of abandon and fun! I would even say that in parts GG can do this, but in the end, it is all very music oriented, even if satirizing it! In the end, the image that I remember best about "surrealism" is the image that we do not like, or love, and hate vehemently! And it is a part of Luis Bunuel's last film ... and it was called "Le Phantome de la Liberte" for a reason! And we don't get it! Maybe we should setup a viewing of "L'Age D'Or" and "Un Chien Andalou", so you can see how controlled and stupid a lot of music is, when it follows a pattern that ... has logic ... when the point of the whole surrealistic thing was to show you how "logic" is not what it was all about in "surrealism" ... and conventional music or concepts, are the worst examples of Dali, I have ever seen!

Check the liner notes again. It clearly states that the cover is Dali inspired.

Long time Dali fan, I recognized he was doing Dali style artwork for those albums. I didn't realize that The Great Leap was actually taken from a Dali painting, cool.

I had no idea, is Doomsday Afternoon from a Dali painting as well?
That explains alot of ideas present in the album actually. Dali-inspired albums always seem to be brilliant.

Hi Mates, last weekend I went to Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid. In this Museum I saw a Dalí Art ('La Memoria de la Mujer' in english 'Woman's Memory'), what reminds me some musical covers... (the heads of the top of the art)
Yes, Phideaux 'Great Leap' !
Perhaps also with 'Doomsday Afternoon'? not the same heads, but, maybe in other Dalí art...
What do you think?
