A friend of my daughter (18een) has shown an unpredictable knowledge of Avant band other than the usual metal and industrial typical of his age. Including lyrics.
Curiosity killed a cat, Schroedinger only half.

Hi,

Not really, and I am 61 ... but then, I have been here a few years, and I have always had the ability to listen to anything and all kinds of other things, including the mentioned bands.

Sometimes they impress me, sometimes they don't, but the fact that they are there and had the guts to do it and stand up for their work, is always admirable.

Music history is full of folks like that and usually the best comes that way ... no one knows anything and all of a sudden they are there. I seriously doubt that major bands, and good ones like the original "progressive" bands can do what they do in a commercial environment with someone telling them what to do.

And that is likely to be the big difference, I imagine.

Music is always there ... it's all a matter if we have the ears for it or not. That is the main reason why I state that no time ever was where music never was ... progressive or not ... the issue being that our "heroes" were no longer as active and brilliant as their light once shined, and we continuously compare things ... but take the comparison out and you will find a lot of music out there ... all over the world!
Some old holy curmudgeon said from his holy trinity of a chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... is always better sex for your and your lover!

Overall I get the impression that British youth is more prog-minded than in the US.

That would be interesting to find out.
Yes they are! As a British youth I can attest to that.

I'm 17, and I've turned my mom into a huge Porcupine Tree fan. She's gotten me into bands I like too though, such as Tool, Radiohead, At the Drive-In, and Polkadot Cadaver (yes you heard right. She's like obsessed with the song Chloroform Girl LOLLOL).

In general I don't like growling, but any kind of music can be appreciated if you put the right attention to it. (and you have the wish to spend some of your energies in doing it). I have personally discovered that I can find pleasure even in death metal. It's not my preferred genre, but why giving up to a possibility?
There is growl even in the Who (Boris the spider) and Pink Floyd (One of these days). It can't be so bad, isn't it?Wink

I dont' want to convince you, probably it's really not your cup of tea, but don't close your mind and your ears to different listening experiences. Never say no.

If you have the patience to spend some time listening to "good growl" even for free on youtube, search for Tuatha de Danann (Brazuzan)  or Ayreon (day sixteen - loser) or Riverside (Second Life Syndrome) just to mention the first things that I have in mind. Growl is just an instrument, not a target.

At the end of the title track they growl, I'm almost sure.
TuathaDeDanann are a folk-metal band and Ayreon is one of the many projects of the Dutch Arjen Lucassen that you find on the homepage wearing the PA T-shirt.

a couple of times when i was around 28yrs old i knew for a while some 'young turks' about my town in their late teen's.
they were very much in the Crusty style and were of the then current Rave scene. ie circa 1987-88.
they used to come around and got to know what sort of music i was playing., and ., judiciously selected for me [or advocated]  1 - Ozric Tentacles from one of the lads
and              2 - from the girlie [i should'nt assume] but i did., and thought i had better be polite in listening to her choice.
                         The Cardiacs "i was super-impressed"
Yep. Can Happen.
