These days I enjoy ELP more. Pink Floyd is probably a better band though

I'm so mad that you enjoy a certain combination of noises that I don't

ELP, simply because I love Greg Lake's voice and BSS is one of my favourite albums
I love Pink Floyd also.

In my opinion:
ELP were a very eclectic and often experimental band whose rather low reputation in the minds of most music critics is unfair.
Pink Floyd were a competent but unspectacular band whose larger-than-life reputation is based, to a large extent, on luck, fashion, and playing it safe.
So I vote for ELP.

Floyd bores me terribly most of the time. ELP, despite the occasional lapse in taste, have some musicianly, engaging compositions under their belts, and Emerson is one of the most brilliant, eclectic (as was stated, and he truly is) pianists of all time.

This is extremely difficult... both are among my all-time favorites, but I'll go with Floyd, they were the band that got me into music and the first album I ever bought was DSOTM. Also they have more albums I like (everything from Saucer through Animals). I only really like the first five ELP albums.

Pink Floyd, because as much as I admire E, L & P's talents, Pink Floyd resonate with me emotionally a lot more. For example, I prefer the relatively simple One of These Days over the virtuosic The Barbarian, or the understated beauty of Shine On over the undeniably incredible Tarkus. |

1968-1970 floyd
1971-1973 elp
1974-1979 floyd
elp were better musicians and composers but they lost the plot by 1974
floyd were more consistent for longer although Piper is a piece of sh*t imo Edited by dr prog - December 11 2011 at 02:42 |

ELP had amazing musicians, of course, but their music never had, for me at least, the edginess of Pink Floyd. I really cannot think of ELP writing a song like Don't Leave Me Now and it's a tribute to Floyd's endurance that Wall was already their, what, 9th album.

tarkus and elp would
My top 200 albums would be made up pretty much entirely of albums spanning 1968-1983 :)

Floyd for me as well. Their 73-77 trilogy is some of the best music in rock. Also, all their other albums are very good to brilliant, Final Cut being the only exception.
ELP's first five are all excellent though, with Brain Salad Surgery being one of my favorite albums.

Pink Floyd by default. Brain Salad Surgery is as excellent as one of the better Floyd albums, though...

I will take Works 1 & 2 and Love Beach over Dark Side, Wish You Were Here and Animals any day .
ELP was great but simply outclassed by PF in the long run.

These days it;s pretty close for me. I've always been a Floyd fan, but I've warmed to ELP a great deal, over the last three years or so, and these days probably listen to ELP more.
I'll vote for Floyd for the reason that it was they who got me into prog, and the fact that I don't think ELP ever wrote anything that tops 'Dogs'

I like them both and have much of both of their catalogs, but enjoy Floyd more these days. Animals has always been one of my favorite albums.
