Not really...the Wetton lineup happened during that post-couple of albums phase and then Discipline with a changed lineup.  If anything, I'd take LTIA, Red and Discipline over ITCOTCK which is influential but not as enjoyable as these.

Yeah even as huge KC fan I have to say it's like a 3ish.

However, Red alone is better than anything Rush has made combined.
OK that's extreme, but Ill stick with it :D

Interesting---I think generally they are not easy on the ears---I more admire lot's of their material and recognize their importance---and really followed them because I'm a Bruford fanboy---listened more to their Discipline period than any other.

^^^  I think ExittheLemming said this once and probably addressed to the same member. That if you don't like KC, what it really means is you probably haven't found that side of them that you could like.  They are unlike most other prog rock bands, at least the big names, in that they have straddled such a long span of time and adapted to the musical trends in each and not just carried on with their style, oblivious to developments.  They have also experimented with so many approaches, be it composition, or the marriage of composition and improvisation on LTIA-Red, or smart, mobile rock if it could be called that on Discipline. So on and so forth.  It is difficult even for a KC fan to enjoy all of their work, such is their diversity but there is really no such thing as a point where you may get off with KC.

Totally different beast -- and I love both -- but Rush has brought me more pleasure over the years.

I love Rush period from 2112 to, say, Signals. After this my interest to their music slowly evaporated. They are great but I hardly listen to them in these days. KC on the other hand has still something interesting one could look for in their music. Even the post 80's period which I didn't like too much started growing in me. All in all, ten or more years ago would have won Rush, today I have to go with KC.

Interesting poll. While I do enjoy a lot of KC, I can't listen to them for long periods, where Rush, maybe with the exception of Snakes and Arrows, I can listen to anytime and for a long time. Never get tired of them.

I didn't really think this poll was all that random, as both had three distinct "classic" periods.
Rush- Hard Rock/Symphonic/synth-driven
KC- Symphonic/Proto-Metal?/rhythm-based
I had a tough time here, but it came to:  Could I name a great (for me) album from each period?
It was then I voted for King Crimson.

Anyone can think of at least one Rush song that could win a poll against "Starless"?

For me, yes. I'll list some:

The Pass
YYZ (and just about every other track on Moving Pictures. actually)
Red Barchetta
La Villa Strangiato
Bastille Day
Something for Nothing
Jacob's Ladder.....

I could go on for some time.

Seems like you are trying very hard to make people understand why they may not like KC.......or maybe why they should like KC?
Wink

I only own In the Court on vinyl and will eventually get the remastered vinyl version, Santa knows, its a wonderful album. I don't own any other KC albums just because what I have listened to does not interest me, its just OK, but not enough to spend money on. Maybe I will see if my local record store has used vinyl copies, I might do that.

I don't care about number ratings, if I like it I will always press PLAY........so for me that choice is heavily weighted to Rush, although last night I did spin Side 2 of In the Court.......I'll probably play it again next month.

Cheers~!

Um, only trying to impress that they are different. If it's Rush or Genesis, I have some notions about their style and there is some continuity about the changes to it across albums, not least because of relatively more stable lineups.  Because KC change so much, it is easier to dislike or like one or two formations rather than to dislike the band itself.  And of course, you could turn around to what I am going to say and suggest any fan would say that about his favourite band, but KC is just hardwork.  There was a time when I would have taken either of Rush or  Genesis over them because most of their albums just seemed ok to me.  My feelings about it couldn't be more different now.  And of course, I viewed KC worship with skepticism at that time so I am not really going to try to convince somebody to dig deeper. Will only restrict myself to saying that it's more likely that one or two albums from some or the other formation make a bad impression on someone who doesn't like KC (and of course, it need not be the case at all, just a general observation).

Two bands that I respect, but with the possible exception of KC's 'Red,' neither has ever grabbed me emotionally. The real two giants are Yes and Floyd.

I can't fairly vote in this poll. I only own 3 KC albums, In the Court, Lizard, and LTIA. In the Court is pretty good, Lizard is uneven, with two amazing songs (Cirkus, Lizard) with some mediocre stuff, and LTIA is a more recent addition, but really growing on me. Rush, however, is the only band that I have a full collection of their studio albums!!

I've heard all their albums, I just don't like them. I'm not saying they're bad, because they're not, just not my thing.

This makes me chuckle because I sometimes like to refer to King Crimson as Bruford's side project.  Sort of similarly, I started listening to King Crimson as a result of my love of all things-Yes, and since I have an outlandish goal to collect all albums that feature a member of Yes on them that put King Crimson on my radar.

Even though there are many albums and songs that I like from King Crimson, I believe the only album that I would rate with 5* is ItCotCK. But then, that's just me.
