Topic: Is Steven Wilson Not Here? Posted: December 21 2011 at 20:45 |
Has anyone else ever noticed that Steven Wilson refers to not being here a lot?
Anesthetizatize-"quite possibly I am not here..." Arriving Somewhere-"arriving somewhere, but not here..." The Sky Moves Sideways-"I find that I'm not here.."
Is he lost or something?

Well, you can't be somewhere until you get there.

Is he lost or something? | It's quite logical really. If you've got a dead wing, you won't be flying any place. If your planet is blank, you'll have no point of reference. And if the sky is moving, well, there you are (or aren't, as the case may be).

He's a fan of Radiohead and Thom Yorke was also not here, but Thom seems to have this thing for crushing that Steven doesn't have.

Sounds like a lyrical theme that he likes to implement. A lot of artists have certain unique ideas that they're really fond of and put in their lyrics. In Steven Wilson's case, I guess its the idea of a person existing, yet not truly existing, or at least in his view of what it means to exist as a human being (a view I agree with on a lot of points). Thus the first person narrative speaking "I'm not here" even though they're the person saying it, and thus would logically be where they are at the moment of saying it, but ironically they themselves are void of the things that make human existence different from any other kind of existence, namely beauty and possessing an intrigue of the world around us as humans. Or its just a clever-sounding thing to say.

The human heart instrinsically longs for that which is true, good, and beautiful. This is why timeless music is never without these qualities.

Well if he were here, I'd like to know just where in my house he's hiding...

I think it's just a vague phrase that depressed teenagers in search of an identity can relate to.

To quote the great Bob Dylan:
"I wish I was beside her but I'm not there, I'm gone."

All that redundancy, the hurry-up-and-wait, listening to the same measure of music hundreds of times, frustrating soundchecks, answering the same tired questions in interviews, more sitting around and waiting, crappy food and shady hotels, playing in a different city every night to crowds that start to all look the same.
I imagine doing that nonstop for a decade or longer could really mess with a persons head, likely leading to feelings of disconnection from the rest of the world, and worse, losing who you are as a person.
Telling yourself that you are "not here" may be the only way to cope with such horror for so long.

^I really wish I had such a "horror" to cope with. And all the money that comes with it. I really do.

Short on ideas? Or maybe thinking the same thing all the time? Stuck in a rut?

He used to be here, then he asked for his account to be removed and now he's not here.
I guess it's something he does quite often.
