Prog folk I listened to this year...

The King is Dead by the Decemberists is pretty poppy but good

Another Realm by Iona is an excellent album if you like more symphonic-leaning folk
God appears, and God is light,
To those poor souls who dwell in night;
But does a human form display
To those who dwell in realms of day.

I second the North Sea Radio Orchestra recommendation, and here's another:

John, by the way, they're reissuing the Ragnarok albums, so that second one will be available in something other than Tachika.  Let's talk!  Wink

One of the best albums released last year, regardless of genre.

Agreed. Another one worth listening from the Prog Folk subgenre is Kebnekajse's album Idioten.

We're focusing mostly on new studio releases, but there were also a number of really good prog folk compilations and live records in 2011:

Judy Dyble - An Introduction To Judy Dyble.  I've only heard two tracks but this is not some sort of acoustic guitar-strumming retrospective of the 60s.  Dyble is as vibrant today as she was more than forty years ago.

In the Labyrinth - One Trail to Heaven.  My friend Peter Lindahl has put together some of his favorites from the group's 20 year history.  I think he left a couple really good ones out (especially from their debut album 'The Garden of Mysteries') but 'Night of the Baskerville Killer" and "Deep Saffron" are worth hearing if you didn't pick up 'Dryad' back when it came out.

Strawbs - Hero & Heroine in Ascencia.  3/5ths of the lineup that recorded the original 'Hero & Heroine' nearly forty years ago reassemble to crank out a new version of the album.  I was skeptical given the band's tendency toward appallingly bland music since about 1982 and the tendency of old geezers to wax sappy on these sorts of projects, but Dave Cousins actually does a pretty good job of keeping everyone focused and off each other's throats long enough to put together a very good hour of music.  Strawbs also put out the 'Acoustic Gold' compilation in 2011, which I'm less sold on.

Mostly Autumn - That Night in Leamington.  IMHO these guys put out way too much stuff which tends to dilute their overall catalog.  But this was Heather Findlay's last concert and in recognition of that I'm willing to shell out $20 USD.  The farewell "speech" aside, the song selection was excellent except that the absence of "Never the Rainbow" was unforgiveable.  Take this and their now-deleted 2002 anthology 'Heroes Never Die' and you have pretty much everything you need to chronicle the band in the days before they got too big for their own good.

"When you think that you lost everything, you find out you can always lose a little more..."

Gillian Welch's HARROW AND THE HARVEST isn't prog in any way shape or form but it's an amazing piece of traditional folk music. Definitely in my top 5 albums of the year genre not considered.

Decemberists KING IS DEAD is also not prog in any way. It's a very solid album though. I have my share of quibbles with it, but "Carry Them All" was one of the few 2011 songs that I played live last year.
Current Listening:

Heater valve kicking on.
Snotty noses being blown.
Griping.
Maybe cookies coming out of the oven???

C is for cookie, and it is good enough for me.

Red Jasper had The Great and Secret Show scheduled for 2011, the Romanian band Bucium had Miorița for 2011 as well, but these did not materialise yet as far as I'm aware of. Unhappy

Yes, I was also looking forward to Red Jasper and Bucium's albums...  never mind, we have a couple of treats in store for us in 2012 with new releases from Jethro Tull and Lot Lorien.
