I would always vote for ELP because of:
The Barbarian
Tank
Tarkus
The Endless Enigma
From The Beginning
Trilogy
Karn Evil 9
Toccata
Pirates
..but that illustrates an issue with ELP , they recorded several great tracks over their first 5 studio albums but none of those albums are masterpeices. (and after Works Volume One there was 'nothing'.)
King Crimson on the other hand made massive albums like ITCOTKC and Red that were virtually templates for symphonic prog and heavy prog. KC was more than one band though and that should be factored into the debate. The line up that made Red was very diferent to that on the debut. Then you had the later stuff. Only one common denominator - Mr Fripp.

I disagree, Trilogy and BSS are both masterpieces.

KC is a more important band---and have music that is holding up over time--the same can't be said for ELP---

Trilogy is the most consistent but The Sheriff and Living Sin are a little lacking
BSS is my favourite album and for 40 minutes is mostly brilliant but the last 5 minutes just isn't impressive enough for me like say the end of Tarkus is.Its my only real gripe although Benny The Bouncer is not exactly ELP's finest moment and neither is the dodgy injoke lyrics on Still You Turn Me On. Crimson by a long way.
I like ELP, and I would agree with Snowie, that Trilogy is a masterpiece. One of my top albums of recent years. It took me quite a while to appreciate both bands, for different reasons, but I've enjoyed exploring Crimson more; not really knowing what to expect with each album I bought, but never being disappointed. |

IMO BSS is their only masterpiece. Trilogy, other than the title track and In the Beginning, bores me

Well I still must disagree. The Sheriiff and Living Sin are excellent tracks. As are Benny the B and Still...... I would say Tarkus is a masterpiece too but I won't. I don't feel like defending it. The end of BSS is aswesome btw. Are you sure you are a fan? You aren't a fan in the way I am. I have noticed this many times before. I love ELP you just seem to like them a lot.

KC's first album is way better than any ELP album.
ELP's first five albums are way better than KC's second best album.
I vote for ELP.
Come to think of it ITCOTCK is only a bit better than Trilogy and Pictures.

ELP made two very good albums (ELP and Trilogy), though they aren't my fave band of all time. I kept 4 of their albums when I had my pogrom last year and got rid of 1200 albums.
KC made one I initially loved (ITCOTCK) but after that, it went downhill and I've got sick of even the debut now - it sounds SO dated. All theirs went to the gulag. And I don't miss them.
So ELP for me.

I think people who LOVE ELP are rare. I do, though. Mainly because of Emerson, who for about five years was more useful to me as a musician than my own piano teacher! King Crimson are more progressive, however. In fact, it is quite clear that they remain the most progressive band in the history of post-Beatles music. I don't make that claim lightly. But along with Yes, these two groups are the only [prog] ones that I'm sure I will continue listening to after the "initial purchasing stages", forming a trilogy ( |
