I'm currently listening to "Familjesprickor" by Zamla Mammaz Manna for the bajillionth time and it suddenly struck me that over the course of the five or so years I've spent with this album it has never been anything less than perfect to my ears. It was perfect on first listen and it's still perfect now.

Most albums take a listen or two to really get into and many will slowly lose their impact on repeated listens, but what albums can you think of which you just "got" immediately and years later still haven't lost their shine?

Heldon's Stand By is the first one that springs to mind. I still love it dearly. I think, and I'm just speculating here, that it also has something to do with the given mental state and your surroundings at the time of listening. I had my first listen to Stand By in the woods during a walk all by myself. It was summer and I was nearly sober. Something about that experience always pops back into my head whenever I listen to it now- even if I find the overall ambiance and feel of the record has much more to do with the ocean. It feels blue somehow.

Foxtrot and Selling England By The Pound. The Lamb has actually grown on me a lot. It's probably my 3rd favourite behind Foxtrot and Selling England. Also, The Return Of The Giant Hogweed from Nursery Cryme has grown on me as well. I was never big about the song at first, but now I realize how well the piece is structured and composed. Pete's vocals still turn me off a bit though.

There are a lot of them. All brilliant for different reasons

Neblenest - Nova Express
Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Io Sono Nato Libero
Voivod - Nothingface
Bondage Fruit II
Surman/Krog/Rypdal/Storass - Nordic Quartet
Exivious
Michael Hedges - Aerial Boundaries

...I could go on and on. It would be easier to name the bands that seemed brilliant at first and lost their luster quickly.

Hm... Maybe Si On Avait Besoin D'une Cinquième Saison. And possibly Blomljud... Embarrassed

But with my favorite albums, those were albums I had to grow into. I don't have any strong emotions about "deeply loving" an album at first listen. Even my favorite albums sometimes sound dull to my ears. I find I need to be in a mood or hankering for an album to completely enjoy it.

The only album I can think of is Circle Takes the Square - As Roots Undo

I'm surprised it happened once even. There's no reason that you should be able to appreciate a work fully the first time that you hear it.

Very few such albums, all of my favorites that I can think of took some time to get into, from a couple listens to a couple years. Aqualung is the closest ones that comes to mind.

Iknorite. My first TMV was Deloused, and on the first listen I was like "WTF is this sh*t??", even thought of selling it. In another week I was in love. I was much more prepared for Frances, though it did take a couple days to digest.

'Acquiring the Taste' instantly tasted good for me and still does.
