His debut was crossover, but his new release might require a change in genre. Possibly heavy prog?

Hmm. I'll admit I'm not that familar with the debut (and haven't listened to it in awhile) but I don't remenber much 'xoverness' of it.

But I agree with Rob, Eclectic seems like a good fit to my ears.

Grace for Drowning is an excellent example of Eclectic prog: Symphonic, heavy prog, jazz, avant all in one package.

I've actually wanted to suggest that move for a while - I always thought crossover was a bad fit - but didn't exactly know how seeing as I'm not affiliated with either team. LOL

Based on my memory of the album, I think I would support that change were we to actually give it a shot.

Glad to see To Shatter All Accord made it so high. 2011 was really a great year.

In better things, thanks so much Andy and all the collabs who made this list possible, 249 albums is such a number, and there were much more good 2011 releases that did not get a vote. It was a fantastic year, in my opinion. Clap

My Last.fm
Jazz-rock conspiracy? Zappa and Miles played at the same festivals in the
summer of '69 right BEFORE Hot Rats AND Bitches Brew were recorded.

There are differences. Wile St. Anger was bad even when compared with other poor metallica releases, Heritage is a decent (though unusual) prog metal realse. With huge influences from the 1970's and a much bluesy feel, that reminds many of the old heavy metal bands, as well as simply leaving behind the heaviest specter of their music, but sticking to their signature sound, Heritage brings "old" and "new" together in one different but familiar way.

Why is the 2009 list still stickied, but not this?

Your not alone, since I started voting in 06, UZ was the only winning album that's ever appeared on my lists.

I think I should expand a bit on what I've said earlier. 3 of my top 10 mad the list (in reverse order) with Discipline, Unexpect and Leprous and as for the rest, they're not bad albums at all (except for the DT album, which really is). I guess I'm just disappointed that Fen and White Willow were left so low after producing two spectacular albums.

Great job Andy on this Mammoth task Clap- i know what its like to compile lists...Wink

I like most of what ended up on the top 10 and most of the other albums tho will have to get hold of Unexpect now and Wobbler on list. I only wish Neal Morse was higher as his live album was killer. Nice to see Opeth so high and Dream Theater return to form.

Wow. Swilson does not deserve that number one spot. Not even a little bit. And although Opeth are one of my favorite bands, Heritage was a massive disappointment that does not belong in the #2 spot.

Also, Kate Bush? The hell? No offense to her or her music, but I don't think prog-related artists should have been allowed on the list.

OTHERWISE, I'm happy with the list. My top three (Wobbler, Haken, and DT) all made it in. And thanks for the quote!

When do we award this man with his first prize fellatio? I'm not up for it though - I've just come back from the dentists...
Also we may need to expand our awards to other more substantial things than the odd meaty surprise.
