I can see a lot of post-rock working for this, but I was thinking on the more uplifting end of things, perhaps some the work by Explosions in the Sky.
You know, I was thinking about the topic and not quite sure. If I were dieing I'd probably be going with whatever music played in my head. Post rock or ambient wouldn't be bad if I were physically listening. In the end I'd rather listen to something I hadn't already heard that was about to be released.
If I were tie dying, probably Terrapin Station.

Attended the funeral of a very close friend who sadly committed suicide. He was a big fan of The Smiths and so the song 'Asleep' was played as we followed the coffin out of the church. The lyrics are very affecting:
Sing me to sleep Sing me to sleep And then leave me alone Don't try to wake me in the morning 'Cause I will be gone Don't feel bad for me I want you to know Deep in the cell of my heart I will feel so glad to go.
For me the ultimate 'music to die to' would be either the tone poem 'Death and Transfiguration' by Richard Strauss, or the last movement from Mahler's 9th Symphony.
Prog recommendation would be 'After the Ordeal' by Genesis
Haiku
Writing a poem With seventeen syllables Is very diffic....

Don't know The Smiths or that Genesis song, but i can really relate to your classical music suggestions. When Richard Strauss was on his own deathbed, he listened to the ending of D & T, and remarked to his wife, something to the effect "You know, this is exactly how it is, i really have captured it in my music" And of course, the finale to Mahler's 9th, would fit that perfectly. (And for me, the Adagio-Finale to Bruckner's 9th Symphony)

Not to sound all new age on you guys but you can experience this without dying. Just crank whatever tunes way too loud and travel to the other side using dmt. (This can take quite a bit of it depending on how good you are at chemistry- ALSO LET ME STATE THAT IF YOU ARE UNDER 21 I DO NOT ADVOCATE DOING THIS. TAKE SOME TIME TO LET YOUR BRAIN DEVELOP BEFORE YOU SCREW IT UP IDIOT) It can last up to 20 minutes and the music will be the soundtrack to what you might even believe is your death at that moment.
And for this I would suggest anything by Volta.
For me personally if I was actually dying I would listen to a bunch of my own music because it resonates within me more than anyone else's. It is the reason I exist on earth and the moment I can't make it anymore I would plan on dying anyway so why not go out enjoying the only pure obsession?

The ending of "Will Bleed Amen" (when it goes all "Secrets like swans") by Cardiacs (who else?!). Or maybe "Shrine of Mad Laughter" by Deathspell Omega- it will give the whole thing a more humorous aura.

I'll pass, thanks. What's dmt, anyway?
When you die your brain overproduces this chemical that exists inside every living thing. The near death experiences that people have are really just dmt overproducing.
It is also what your dreams are made of literally.

I mean no offense, but given that information the whole dmt thing sounds like a very bad idea.
