Broken Heart Quintessential Van Der Graaf Generator. The power and atmosphere of that track is brilliant.

I think "A Plague" and "Man-Erg" completely blow it away. Hammill probably put it on the album just to be obtuse!

Big smile Okay I totally agree with you on that! Man Erg might just be my favourite VDGG tune of all time, well that, or The Sleepwalkers. The lyrics and the drama of the song really made an impression on me the first time I ever heard it. I've been hooked on VDGG ever since.

Yes I was the same - Man-Erg along with Refugees, Afterwards, Boat of million years were the first songs that got me into VDGG/Hammill - from a Charisma compilation. Then along came A Plague of lighthouse keepers and I was hooked!

A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers has never really held my attention for some reason... but I love Lemmings and Man-Erg, those are two of my favorite VdGG songs.(note: I'm just replying to the posts above, I'm not claiming it "ruins" the "otherwise perfect" Pawn Hearts.  It doesn't ruin it, and it's not perfect)

Yeah, I love A Plague and it's definitely in my top 5 for VDGG, but it doesn't grab my full attention a lot of the times, as well. It's one of those songs I like to listen to in a darkened room, really. The We Go Now section is brilliant with the grand piano and the thoughtful, emotional lyrics.

Not that long ago I would have said "Seamus" from Pink Floyd's Meddle, but I've listened to that album so many times it's just not the same with out it. :/
I still don't like "Alan's Psychadelic Breakfast" from Atom Heart Mother though.

Also, the first half of "Nocturnal Conspiracy" on Haken's Visions. I love every single other thing those guys do, but I just can not get into the first chunk of that song.

Found another one:

"Who Are You' - Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Had they come up with slightly better lyrics and/or used a guitar for the main riff, it wouldn't be too bad. As it is, the synths make it sound like a guy fumbling around the theme from Inspector Gadget.

Rush - Rivendell. More or less auto-skip whenever I play Fly By Night.

So do I and think Bitches Crystal, the Only Way, Infinite Space and Time and a Place are on a par with side one.

BUT

Jeremy Bender is slight whimsy and Are You Ready Eddy? sucks (if only the answer had been No!)

Jeremy Bender was one of my favourites back in the day and Are You Ready Eddy is ELP in awesome loose playing mode. Great piano. It's what i liked about them. This variation. Got me into all sorts of different music.

Yep, that's probably why they had such a huge following in their day. There was something to love for everybody.
They would've been extremly boring with only Keith's keyboard meanderings or Greg's ever so lovely ballads.

Thats interesting I acctually consider Rivendell one of Rush's greatest songs. I honestly think Fly by Night could do without Best I Can and In the End but hey that just my opinion and I respect yours.Smile

Just remembered another one, how about The Queen from GG's debut?
Never understood why it's there, totally useless for me.
Maybe if they would give it their own twist or interpertation than it would have been better.
