There are defenses to the coming fork.

.
I expected
22. .... Qd6+ forking king and knight with a chance to get the material back.
with
23. Re5 and then g6 would have left me in trouble
Ended ugly. Edited by Negoba - April 23 2012 at 15:16 |

Current Listening:
Heater valve kicking on. Snotty noses being blown. Griping. Maybe cookies coming out of the oven??? C is for cookie, and it is good enough for me. |

Roy Lopez! Roy Lopez!
I luv that move because its the only one I know... Except the Roy Fairbank, which is to wipe all the pieces off the board and storm off. |

Ended ugly? I think it was a very nice checkmate where your pieces collaborated perfectly. But I agree with you that 22. … Qd6+ would have been a much better move by Vompatti. |

It always feels ugly when a game gets really one-sided. The fun of the game is the struggle where it could go either way at any second. This game still had a lot of uncertainty up until the mating sequence, and would have still been up for grabs if he'd made the Qd6+ move. |

I've had like 3 games in a row where people have let me get away with king/queen forks. Lucky me

I thought I was developing an even game with Colin and then already made an oversight that loses me a move.

It's kind of annoying when some of the tournament games never seem to end.

The tournaments are hard. I lose track of where I am in a game and make more silly mistakes. Also so many matches going on at once can be annoying. I did really well in only one of the 10 or so chess.com tourneys I've been in. Also I think some people sandbag to win. |

What's sandbagging?
It's still pretty close to even, but you've got a couple important decisions to make pretty soon I think. Better you than me ![]() Edited by Triceratopsoil - April 25 2012 at 19:31 |

Ok this is going to get interesting. Up an exchange but you get a massively advanced pawn.
Sandbagging is intentionally losing a few games to lower your rating so you can play in a lower bracket.
In USCF chess there is a rule called the rating floor where, for example, once you get to 1500 your rating can never go below 1300. This is to prevent sandbagging at tournaments where money is at stake (which is most adult tournaments.) The little thing I do on Fridays consists of quads. Everyone puts in $20 and whoever wins each quad gets 70 back, the club keeps 10. (Or something like that) Edited by Negoba - April 26 2012 at 08:31 |

Alright, gotcha. I'd be too proud to purposely drop my rating. And yeah, I figured I'd try something new |

When I was in University there was this guy who would play up to 10 guys at one time looking in the opposite direction of the board. He'd have another guy calling out his opponent's moves. Then he would tell his guy what his move was and his guy would move the pieces for him. I played him several times and the b*****d kicked my ass all the time. I only saw one guy almost beat him. A girl almost beat him as well. We called the guy Mr. Spock. he was from Eastern Europe somewhere. I have a friend from Hungary who I refused to play because it was a waste of time because I knew I,d get the crap knocked out of me. He learned the game at the age of 5 or something ridiculous like that.
