If you must know in Belgium, someone with both Walloons and Flemish "blood" (is such a blood  thing is possible, but some Flemish extremists trying to break the country are trying to establish that fact , but funnily enough those a**holes have French names........) and that is about 85% of Belgians , we call ourselves jokingly Zinnekes  after the bastard Brussels street dogs who have totally undefined race but are the most jovial characters around . The vast majority of Belgians relate totally with those Breughel paintings of feasting and partying. Even the Flemish accept the French word of "Bon-Vivant" as to describe that state of enjoying life to the fullest.

Hi Hugues ...

It's a pretty complicated affair actually ... incidentally I lived in Belgium from 1983-1988, my house was in Overijse (43, St. Hubertus Dreef, I still remember ) and my school was in Tervuren ... just after the elephant near the African museum ... I was maybe a bit too young to understand the complexities of Belgian politics/culture, but it is a place with good memories ...

As for the Indian and Chinese minorities here goes (deep breath)

Tamils are found predominantly in the South-East mosy part of India in the state of Tamil Nadu. Last time I checked there were approximately 80 million people in that state. Literacy is pretty low and I'm sad to report that a number of movie actors have been Chief Minister of the state (Most notably MG Ramachandran and Jayalalitha (not sure about spelling) ...

Tamils also make a minority of those in Sri Lanka (the majority are Sinhalese) ... and that minority is fighting a civil war against the majority government for the right to form a separate state in Jaffna Tamil ... these people are ethnically the same as the Tamils in India, but they crossed over to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) centuries ago.

The Iyer reference is a caste thing, my father belongs to the highest caste (Iyers = Tamil Brahmins), which in Hindu society is that of the priest (Those priests arranged it so that they are higher than kings and warriors!) ... my father thus went against tradition when he married my mother ... in fact, even though the marriage happened in Malaysia in the 1970s there were some threats of violence.

My mother is a Malayalee. Malayalees are mainly in India's South-Western most state of Kerala. There were around 15 million Malayalees last time I checked ... Malayalees have a much higher literacy rate than Tamils (something like 95% versus 40%) ... This literacy resulted in Kerala's workforce being particularly well-informed ... Kerala was the site of the first democractically Communist government in the world. In 1959. and the Communist Party India (Marxist) still routinely holds the state government ...  My mother's family is Catholic and the as Catholic church in Kerala was reorganised by Portugese (who also went to Goa) a few hundred year ago ... the community has surnames that are Portugese ... even if the people are wholly Indian ... thus my mother's maiden name is Gonzalez!

My grandfathers left the poverty of India roughly 100 years ago to come to Malaysia, where my family is now based ... the fact that they did clerical work instead of labour on a rubber estate is a major point within Indian society as most Indians came here as indentured labourers ... Indians in Malaysia make up roughly 8% of the population. That's about 2 million Indians in Malaysia

My wife is Chinese, Chinese make up about 35% of the population ... Nearly 8 million. The Teochews are from Guangdong province in China, the Hokkien are from Fujian province ... both relatively Southern parts of China. The Hakka are actually Northern Chinese who migrated to the South but never fully assimilated ...

Millions of Southern Chinese spread throughout SE Asia to escape poverty and settled in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, etc. My wife's family also came around 100 years ago, and are Catholic as well.

Because of the Communists in China who kept the country isolated, Indians have tended to have closer links than Chinese to their homeland, thus marrying outside the clan/caste/linguistic group/religious group is a lot more common among the Chinese than it is among the Indians ... although this too has changed ...

Hmm, a bit of a prog epic of an answer there, eh? I think I've got my facts right ...

Martin,

Thanks for the enlightenments. I can see I need to pick up those books again because of my poor results (2/5 but I was hesitating on Hokkien being chinese too).

Quite a family history!!!

So You lived in Overijse...... This may be on of the communes were trouble may well start should things get really ugly in these latitudes. The city is composed (and always has been)  of some 30 percent francophones - who never had language rights but things happened smoothly for decades - but in the last decades , many foreigners (NATO and EEC workers and families were always quicker to speak French than, rarely-used ouside Belgium, Flemish ) and Brussels inhabitants moving to the suburbs make up almost 50% of non-flemish threatening to upturn the local power circles. \Since the guys are about to lose (and it looks for a long time to come) the controls have become out-of-control themselves (are you sure you are following this?) and flemish extremists have turned to neo-nazism to claim the right of the land instead of the right of the civilian.

When Belgium became a two part (actually much more complicated than that) linguistic land in 62 by drawing a frontier, the Flemish "captured" around 1,5 million francophone (over a 10 million Belgium) declaring them as Flemish (making them 65% instead of 53%) but also absorbing the 65% of every budget leaving 35% dough for the other 48% of the population (only Brussels managed to survive as a minority. Actually some 85% of Brussels inhabitants are french speaking - are you sure you are following this , I see your eyes are wondering away from the screen) but they allow the 15% minority to have 40% of the seats as a gesture of goodwill (and fair rights for the francophones in the suburbs) , but this is always challenged by the Flemish .

This is even more surrealists that the Flemish who claim the right of soil have made their capital (Brussels) ouside its territory. No wonder people see surrealim as the prime quality of this land (after the food of course) and it fascinates most other Europeans on how little nationalistic most Belgians are (almost a lack identification ) . Belgium is celebrating 175 years of independance but no-one up the Flemish north seem to care (except negatively ) and in the Walloon South, they have pretty come to grip that Belgium will not see 200 years.

The Battle of Brussels is likely to shed some blood as the Flemish extremist forces have launched a reconquista of Brussels. Right at the center of Europe. Grim future......

Certainly sounds messy, Hugues, I do remember that each party had two versions ... ie French speaking Socialists and Flemish speaking Socialists were two different parties ... I presume Vlaams Blok is the party that really annoys you ... although Front Nationale seems a bit frightening too ... I got this list from electionworld.org ... Surely the people in the middle ground have enough power at a national level ... so I presume the problem is within city/regional councils? I remember there were also two parliaments Fleming and Walloon, outside of the national parliament ... is that right?

Kamer der Volksvertegenwoordigers and Senaat: 18 mei 2003 (91.1/91.9 %) % 150 % 40

Flemish Liberals and Democrats (Vlaamse Liberalen en Democraten) VLD 15.4 25 15.4 7
SP.A-Spirit SP.A-Spirit 14.9 23 15.5 7

Christian Democratic and Flemish (Christen-Democratisch & Vlaams) CD&V 13.2 21 12.7 6
Socialist Party (Parti Socialiste) PS 13.0 25 12.8 6
Flemish Bloc (Vlaams Blok) VB 11.6 18 11.3 5
Reformist Movement (Mouvement Réformateur) MR 11.4 24 12.1 5
Democratic Humanist Centre (Centre Démocrate Humaniste) CDH 5.5 8 5.5 2
New Flemish Alliance (Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie) N-VA 3.1 1 3.1 -
Ecolo Ecolo 3.1 4 3.2 1

On the extreme right both on regional and local Flemish front , the Fascist VB ( Vlaams Block )are about to become the first party (27% and up to 35% percent respectively) while on the Walloon side the FN is around 8% and max 15% on local front.

But the real problem (both on the Flemish region and the national level) is the EX-VU (non-fascist Flemish independist party)  that exploded into the three other parties (socialist , christian democrats and liberals). This explosion made every party that picked up the pieces gain 2% at last elections, (so those new members get listened to a lot and they take the advantage by anteing up their resolution and sometimes sound even further right than the fascist do) except for the Ecologists that got trounced and lost everyone of their seats.

Trouble is that every democratic party is running wild behind the Vlaams  Block and recently the Prime Minister of Belgium (always a flemish for the past 40 years) got called a bad flemish by the christian democrats (in the opposition at national but in power at the regional level) because he rulled to not make a decision and postpone it since it was not on the gov't agenda. You'd swear the last time one called somebody a bad countrymen was either in Berlin in 33-45 or in Serbia-Bosnia in 95.

On the Walloon side there are four democratic parties but the ecologist took also a beating but much less severe (the southern part of country is much greener than the very industrialized north part, but this was not so some 50 years ago - the opposite) . The extreme-right is a distant fifth (sometimes fighting for fourth place in run down area full of unemployment). The problem on the Walloon side is a run-down industry with a very powerful socialist party , "protecting" the jobless, thus creating what I shall call a red cancerous walloon growth , partly responsable for the increase of the Brown Flemish (and much bigger and dangerous ) cancerous growth .

Another big flaw the Walloons have is to be particularly lazy to speak Flemish (a varying form of Dutch but changes from city to city at least in the spoken form , thus discouraging a lot of people) . The lack of identity I was speaking of in my previous post is really present on the Wallooon side as the name Walloon come from Flemish people and designated them as "foreigners/outsiders".

The people trying to emulate a walloon identity are regularly ridiculed by the satyric press , very present (as you can imagine in such a surrealist country) and much admired. Our biggest anarchists are pro-Belgium but anti monarchists , pro-life , pro-sex , anti-papists , throw cream tarts at Bill Gates , invite the press at their arrest when Gates returns to Belgium, organize coup d'état with prior warnings and invite Belgian TV to make sure they are bloodless and are really Jolly Jokers. They make films portaying Belgians as sympatic losers , who clainm not being able to get laid , but do not count their three mistresses in that count as well as their wives.

On this lighter note , read you monday!

I also have a mistress waiting ..... My girlfiend

I, like the rest of you, am an ape-descendant, so why should colour be important in any way?

Actually, according to light laws, we are all black, except visible light makes us Black or white...

Hispanic or latino aren't races, it's a culture and related to a language.
They are a combination of 3 races:

European descent(Spain): Andy Garcia
Mestizo(Native American/white): Maradona, Che Guevara.
Mulatto(black/white): Rosie Perez, Jennifer Lopez, Benicio del Toro.
Sub-Saharan(black): Pele
Native American: Hugo Chavez

And these are Caucasian: Arabs, Berbers, indians, pakistanis, persians and Jews
