Can you think of instances where real sounds of nature have been incorporated into a prog song? I don't mean instruments sounding like something out of nature, but real animal or nature sounds.
Some that come to mind for me are Triumvirat-Pompeii The beginning of side one begins with the sound of sea birds and the ocean. The same goes for the beginning of the song "The Hymn" from side two Mahavishnu Orchestra-Visions Of The Emerald Beyond-Near the end of side one, there is a place where there are the sounds of birds chirping Wallenstein-No More Love The beginning of side two with the title track begins with the sound of sea birds and the ocean Rush-A Farewell To Kings-the sounds of birds chirping on "Xanadu" must be tons more out there, as i find prog to be sometimes very evocative of the beauty of nature |

I don't know if the sound of birds chirping is actually the work of birds, not synthesizers (but the latter would be cool
). Edit: Yeah, I actually meant CTTE. I apologize.OH! ... My personal favorite: the beginning of Cirrus Minor (PF). If you like the sounds of a farm, go with Animals (PF again) for the sounds of the sheep. If you just want the sound of a water trickling down, I suppose you've heard one on 2112 (Rush). If you want to kill a bee and hear more chirping, go with Grantchester Meadows on Ummagumma (guess who?) And then there is the sound of the wind on One of These Days (?) Not a sound of nature, but: church bells for a pastoral feel? Fat Old Sun! (again, the four dudes.)

Rush - Permanent Waves - Natural Science. It has the sound of water being paddled at the beginning and the end.
And also the beginning and end of Close to the Edge.

Edgar Froese - Epsilon in Malaysian Pale
Tangerine Dream - Underwater Sunlight (I think) Recorded nature and animal sounds are all over the progressive electronic genre but those two are the only ones that immediately came to mind.

This kind of sounds can be very nice to ambient a song, when done right. I like mostly the ones Pink Floyd uses... well, in the case of "Cirrus Minor", and perhaps also "Granchester Meadows" I could almost say the sounds of birds are part of the music, and not just background ambientation. But when done wrong, they can be really annoying. There's a song on Rick Wakeman's "No Earthly Connection" where he uses the sound of water running... and it doesn't make me think of nature, but of a faucet.

This acid-folk one (I consider it prog in a prog folk sense) was the one to "spring" to my mind for the sounds of water:

The second track from Jade Warrior's At Peace album begins with flowing water. Renaissance's Song of the Sea has both ocean and shore birds on it.

If K-rock counts, Neu's 'Seeland' features the sounds of thunder and rain. 'Leb'Wohl' follows that, suggesting that an ocean was created with rain. Seriously, what is it with the sound of water almost all over prog
?

Good call! That album seems to have gone into relative obscurity -- it's been out of print for years. I recently ran into a Zappa fan that didn't even know it existed. I think it's one of his five finest works, though. |

The Moody Blues - "Procession", the opening track to Every Good Boy Deserves Favour. Has sounds of a thunderstorm, raindrops, and birds chirping.

thought of another-from Pell Mell-Marburg-side one track two "The Moldau" starts off with the sound of a river flowing (makes sense considering the song title)
