Hey all. I recently decided that the main thing my library is missing is some good instrumental stuff, as that's something that I've never really explored. I'm interested in any type of music be it atmospheric or energetic or whatever, as long as it's not too metal-y. Thanks in advance. :)

Hands self-titled first album.
It will be a good intro to instrumental cause like 75% to 85% of the album is instrumental and the little parts that have vocals are nice breaks and its very very highly reccomended!

Thanks for the recommendations so far, guys. Hands is indeed pretty good and the two bands Horizon suggested has piqued my interest in more post-rock.
By the way, one thing that I count as instrumental is non-English vocals which blend in with the music, even though it's not technically instrumental I mentally sort it the same way. Something like Sigur Ros (a band I enjoy a lot).

Koenjihyyakei, most things that are Zheul
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez's solo albums are amazing but one in particular is called Xenophanes. It is, imo, as good or better than a lot of volta and it is all in spanish.
Also try Hoyry-Kone for more foreign language stuff and there are a lot more instrumental sections anyway than vocal sections
Birds and Buildings is also AMAZING

Dave Bainbridge - Veil of Gossamer (vocals are foreign languages or scat-like, so they are really like an extra melodic instrument...)

Cool album, thanks Polo. And it's free too! Working on working my way through the rest of the suggestions, I'll let you know what I think. :)

There's a band in Argentina (my country) that makes excelent intrumental heavy prog, it's like Iron Maiden mixed with Rush and a lot of acid... check them out:

Gazoinks, there is so much music, are you interested in 70's stuff or more modern sounding?

6 wives of Henry the VIII, from Rick Wakeman, is one of my favourite albums, as well as Criminal Record (though it's got one song with vocals). Focus has almost all it's discography instrumental, and I like it a lot, specially the album Hamburger Concerto. I also have come to like Mike Oldfield very much, and at least his 70's albums are instrumental (and it seems in the 90's he came back to the intrumental albums). And the song "Histoires Sans Paroles" (Stories without words) from Harmonium is a great instrumental song which should not be missed, veven if the rest of the album (si on avait besoin d'une cinquiem saison) isn't instrumental.
As for Liquid Tension Experiment, which was recommended before, I do have enjoyed them pretty much, but they have their fair share of metal. |
