Mars Volta yes. PT not so sure.  Wilson is drawing heavily from the 70s for sure, but is he influencing? Maybe influencing the bands in the production studio, but are there bands whose style derives in part from PT, or are they also looking to the 70s for their primary inspiration?

I would add Anglagard, Spock's Beard and the Flower Kings to those.

UK must surely feature - especially...Eddie Jobson (Zappa, Jethro Tull, Roxy, Curved Air)  & John Wetton(King Crimson, Asia).  Do you prog rock fans know they are performing in London for one  night only for the first time in 33 years playing UK and King Crimson music - May 24th 2012 - see www.underthebridge.co.uk and www.ukreunion.com

Most 90's and 2000's prog groups seem to be still influenced by 70's monsters :

Pendragon : huge Floyd and Genesis influences
Walls of Babylon : Thank you "Shine on you crazy diamond"
Lots of Tony Banks influences in other songs.
Pure album : lot of "The Wall" influences

Porcupine tree and Steven Wilson : Floyd and Crimson influences
The sky moves sideaways : idem "Shine on"
Radioactive toy : sounds like "The Wall"
...

My brother the wind : early Floyd influences

Finally : Pink Floyd, Genesis and King Crimson are in my opinion the most influential.
On contrary, it is hard to find Van der graaf, Yes or Tull influence on recent bands.

Some other recent bands have their own style : Riverside, Tangent, Unitopia
These bands may be the most influential for the future ??

Confused Riverside ... Floyd influence:

with a touch of Porcupine Tree:

Well ok for the two examples you gave.
That makes one more "shine on" like piece.
I must admit I didn't know the first one.
For the second one, and Porcupine Tree influence, there is something indeed...
It seems that with their latest release "Anno domini", Riverside took a turn and found a more original and personal style.
But maybe is there in it another influence I missed !?

I think Second Life Syndrome is their most unique and represents them best.

I tend to agree with you, but what attracted me to them, (and that album in particular), was the underlying Floyd and PT influence  - it's not horribly gauche and blatant cloning, it's subtle and considered, just as real influence should be, it puts them in the same neighbourhood and that's fine by me.

I've always liked Out of Myself the best of their albums, but am starting to appreciate Anno Domini High Definition more and more.

Well, Riverside haven't made a duff album yet, and that's an achievement.

I like your whole listing!  Haven't heard "Riverside" yet...guess I will have to give them a listen...

For fairly modern/newer bands, I couldn't agree more. Don Cab are the underdogs, let's not forget their influence on Post and Math Rock!

Thanks.

I don't understand why people list bands like Riverside, Flower Kings, Porcupine Tree and such when their influences are fairly obvious and aren't really groundbreaking musically.

Rush was the ultimate influence.

Before Rush was around, the idea of Rush was subconsciously implanted into the Beatles, then the Moody Blues, and Crimson. Once Rush came out, all current Prog bands were influenced by them. All future Prog will be influenced by Rush.
