Looking for some artists that have really emotive, but rough vocals in them. Reminiscent to Gabriel's Genesis.

I'm NOT looking for some extreme metal or anything like that, but i can be fairly heavy.

Thanks!

Daniel Gildenlöw from Pain of Salvation might fit the bill.

Not like Gabriel, but Museo Rosenbach sprang to mind immediately (could mention lots of Rock Progressivo Itlaliano) RPI):

Then aggressive vocals a la Area but farther still from Genesis:

Lets see:
  1. David Byron (Uriah Heep): The guy was able to go from the lowest notes to acute aggressive screams
  2. Steve Walsh: He canalized his aggressiveness creating emotional passages
  3. Bruce Dickinson: Another guy capable of reaching extreme notes with aggressiveness.
This are my top 3.

Lino from Osanna does a great job of aggression while staying emotive - especially on the second side of 'Palepoli'

Mike Patton, can be very aggressive without constantly screaming - not sure if you're a fan, but Tomahawk albums, though FNM ones too.

Oops, this "rough" vocal thread will get me nothing but troubleShocked.  So I will wish you well in your search, but I will sit this one out.

I do like Ivan_Melgar_M's choice of Steve Walsh as a wonderful singer, but I don't know if that counts as a "rough" voice.

If you want a very emotional powerful voice, check out Benoit David's work on:

Mystery - One Among The Living
http://www.amazon.com/One-Among-Living-Mystery/dp/B003ILCKQA

I can see & feel the emotion pouring out of the loudspeakers, on that CD.  Not metal but very powerful rock definitely on the prog side.

Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull sings agressivly i think

Derek shulman is also quite abrassive/agressive in his delivery,

outside of prog, ever heard of Chris Cornell, that is agression and expression at highest level Big smile
you know Procol Harum created their own nieche in prog in the 70s like theyr own symph prog sound which they molded to their own IMO, quote Aginor

I's not progressive, but when I heard the atmosferic "Please Dont Judas Me" by Nazareth, I thought the singer was amazing.
He had that kinda of "you don't want to mess with me" thing, but in "Please..." he sings like a condemned prisoner.
