It's interesting with both that I know other "prog" bands with the same names much better than these. I know the US Cartoon in Avant Prog well, and the Australian one a bit, and I know the JRF Agora from Italy. I have heard some of this Cartoon before a long time ago too, and I think I heard a sample once of this Agora when I was looking for the other Agora which I stopped listening to almost as soon as I heard it.
Listening to the tracks (just skimmed the Agora ones as it seems far removed from my tastes), this is a very easy vote for the Brazilian Cartoon. Edited by Logan - April 09 2012 at 12:26 |

Well, I've just reviewed the latest Agora, and they are great...this time my Mexican blood calls me, though Cartoon are great actually.

It's interesting that from those samples, Agora doesn't even strike me as a progressive band. It strikes me more as an AOR metal band. The music sounds like commercial melodic/ symphonic metal to me without any experimentation or originality, and sounds more akin to prog related music to me as it is has some Prog qualities, but those seem superficial to me. But that just illustrates my ignorance when it comes to Progressive Metal, and of course hearing only two tracks is hardly adequate (and I find it too hard to really listen to the tracks to evaluate fairly -- the structure, blending of genres, experimentation etc.).

Was not particulary fond of any of these two. But Cartoon has some strange charm which I get somewhat drawn to.

Not really so fond of either too. Perhaps if I heard more Agora I may grow to like it... but don't really feel so much like doing so. Cartoon played very well, but there were many, well, cartoonish passages which I weren't so fond of, besides, if I'm hearing a latin american band, well, I would rather listen to them singing in spanish (or portuguese, if they are brazilian). I'll be giving my vote to Agora.
