What do you mean by huge urge?  To me the only point of these polls polls is to share, discuss, and discover music.  I find embedded videos a very easy way to discover music and share with people who may not know it.  I prefer these music topics with videos.  Of course people can always use youtube to search, I like to know the music in a poll before voting, but this makes it easier for me and I am more likely to check out an embedded video than a hyperlink.

I love to hear people's impressions of music.  That said, lots of embeds will slow down some people's internet connections (if they don't have decent broadband ISP or computer).  Instead of coming across as insulting to those who like to share and discover music this way, perhaps you could ask that people use hyperlinks to the videos instead, if that is your concern.

I'm glad that Wilmon has provided the hyperlinks and hope people take the time to check out what they don't know.

This isn't it?

It says homenaje, but is it a video homage with the actual song or a band giving homage to Alux Nahual by covering their song 'Cola De Golondrina'?

My spanish is very poor, and I'm not familiar with the works of the band in question, so I can't tell, but perhaps someone else can?

Edit: Here's the same video, uploaded by another user: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNOvJ-8s8WE I think it's the track in question and not a cover.

Edit 2: Ended up voting for Kayak - Merlin. Alux Nahual - Cola De Golondrina trailing just behind in 2nd though.

Insulting am I? That's funny.

You are one of the worst culprits and you are a mod too. You embed several videos in one post like an addict. All I know is a soon as I see you have posted I press the back button.

With the misclick of a button, I just lost a post that I spent half an hour writing addressing your concerns in as much detail as I felt was not thoroughly insane, but was heartfelt and constructive, I thought.

Ian: I am an addict -- I'm addicted to music.  I really should have PMed you with my concern, and I do apologise for that. That was inconsiderate of me. I said that it "came across as insulting", but perhaps I would be the only one who find it inconsiderate -- as the worst offender.  Saying "huge urge to show off" instead of stating your concerns and asking people (you didn't directly address it to me even though I was the "worst offender") if they would stop because of certain reasons to me was expressed in a manner that I did feel insulting.  Sorry if that was not your intent.

I wanted to explain why I have been doing it, and why I think various others do, which I don't think are for the reasons that you appeared to think they are (it is showing off, but it's about showing off the music rather than an ego thing as I see it).  Had you been explicit with concerns and not seemed to be putting-down anyone, then I would have explained why i like it, but told you that I would avoid it from now on.  Or if you were just wondering why people do it, and not wanting them to stop, then you could have just asked without putting a what could be seen (was by me) as a tactless phrasing spin on it

I have received no complaints until now that I am aware of about embedding videos, yet I have been doing it for quite some time.  I used to avoid more than three as I did worry about page loading times, but I thought perhaps that certain conditions had improved (I'm no techie) since it's been a  long time since I had any problem with page-load (I use an iPod, Blackberry and laptop to access this site without problem).  That said, after you made your post, even though you didn't mention it in your post, that people without broadband and/or really slow computers might well have problems with the page (I also block scripts that can slow things down).  Thinking about it, I also realize that posting multiple vids can be disruptive and irritating -- it breaks the flow of discussion, and requires more scrolling down.  I dislike big forum sigs for that reason, and commonly block them.

If anyone has a problem with my actions, feel free to directly communicate with me, and I will address your concerns and talk them out (expect some tedium in such cases, long-winded is how I am cause I try to think of lots of angles when posting, and often lose my focus).

Now that I am aware of it being a real problem, and I do thank you for that Ian, I will avoid embedding vids in most topics (if its my own, I won't, or another topic starter who I know feel much the same way as I do about video embeds, I won't).

I suggested embedding videos for these polls before, and thought it was okay with the topic starter, so that's another reason why I did it.  In the future, I will use hyperlinks  to youtube rather than embed videos.  It is a better idea when there are lots of videos, and I should have thought of that.

I don't like to vote, usually, without hearing music from all of the choices, and being uberlazy, I find embeds easier, but I will take into account your concerns and my realizations.  In the end, it really is only the results that matter, and so mission accomplished.  I had no idea that you would hit the back button as soon as soon as you saw I had posted (I hope that's only because of the videos and not just what I say, which can be pretty off-putting I know -- even I don't like my posts and know that I can come across as very insulting.  There's a learning-curve, of course, and some take longer to learn than others).

See Logan. You made me feel a bit ashamed of myself now. I have no problem of videos in the right place but as you say a post with many is annoying. And maybe it is only me that is annoyed. If so i suggest you carry on as before. You know what I am like. A bit of a miserable git. I am outspoken of course, but not intentionally rude here.

As I intimated, I wish I'd not complained now, especially with your reasonable and conciliatory reply. I didn't want a fight but I sort of expected one.

I don't agree with this in this case. We are voting for best track of the year. A track to represent the collective feeling and memory of the time. For me...if I never heard of a nomination I can never vote it best track of the year. Even if i listened to the sample and loved it. We probably differ in this....we definitely differ.

^^ Don't worry about it, and I do think on reflection that posting lots of vids can be inconsiderate in such topics.  I like it when people do, but I can't expect others to feel the same way.

I like to say that there's more than two sides to every coin.... The vote doesn't really matter to me, I could listen to them all after voting, or not vote at all, but I like to post impressions of music sometimes when writing the post where I say what I decided to vote before.  That's just personal preference.  I could vote first, listen later, that's almost my motto when it comes to gun-slinging.

I'm fine with individuals going about it however they like -- I don't think such poll results are important anyway, they don''t tell me much, but I am interested to see what individuals of this community vote for.

I find this whole notion of best so problematic that I don't worry about it much. Differnt people interpret that differently.

What one votes for and nominates, of course, says more about the individual than it does about the quality of the music.  I find the best premise rather unfortunate, but it is what it is.  The results reflect the feelings of limited people from a very limited number of nominations, and the results are skewed in various ways (personal tastes obviously, who is online and checks the topic, familiarity, what got nominated, split votes due to tracks being listed off of various albums, the individual's feelings at the moment of voting which could be due to re-visiting or discovering new music...).   To me it's not about a collective feeling and memory of the time, too grandiose a concept to me,  it's about a small number of individuals out of which you will find quite disparate tastes who check the topic and vote for something they like at the time, or has nostalgic value etc., and I'm more interested in what individuals say than what they vote for.  And on that level, it is also about my individual feeling at the time which may be influenced be hearing something from the poll.  It is a reflection, but that reflection is based on a limited number of individual's tastes and whims.

Mostly, I really only listen so that I can discover or re-discover, as is common, music, and I don't always bother voting as the results are not of value to me.  Sometimes I do vote before hearing them all, but I usually do it after listening to as much as possible if I remember to vote.

I'm not a big fan of making sport out of music, though I can appreciate some music competitions (had a battle of the bands competition when I was at school, is was fun even though my little band, Acid Enema, did not win), but it's the journey rather than the end-result that matters to me more

If I find a new-to-me track and love it, I may well vote for it over one I already knew (I get excited when i find something I like) as I usually vote for what is best for me at the time (a month later I might have already forgotten the music, but...).  I'm fine with however people vote

Now I'm really rambling -- haven't slept much in many nights.
