Well, the artwork is pretty lackluster, kind of "I just bought Photoshop yesterday."

And Rush has been pretty melody-challenged since the mid-nineties.  I miss the melodic 80's.  As much as people complain about the synthesizers, they did lend themselves toward composing actual songs.

That being said, this is Rush.  And fingernail clippings from Rush are more worthy of our attention than the best work of any recent band.  So, the short of it is, they've already made a sale as far as I'm concerned.

Just about everything you wrote rings true for me. I honestly thing Moving Pictures-Hold Your Fire is the best Rush ever made, but I'd even be willing to drop Moving Pictures out of that and that period would still be better than everything that came before. BU@B and Caravan left be a bit flat, and at least 50% of it is from the production. It's just squashed and in your face all the time. The songs can never really breathe like they need toIt's not quite the terrible master job of Vapor Trails, but come on. Maybe the final mix for the album will be better.

that was my first thought when i heard caravan.  however, some of my lesser favorite rush albums (counterparts) have been growing on me lately, so i'm totally psyched for this.  the clips def sound like a nod to the past and a push to the future.  very modern production, but listenable and warm.  love ged's bass sound!  my first reaction to the artwork was that it was plain compared to caravan's.  however, i really like the simplicity of it.  very straight forward.  damn, so excited for this!!

very good points.  i've forced myself to deal with modern production and just enjoy hearing the instruments.  a spine tingling melody is a nice bonus as would be so great.  but the above comment is correct.  noting really too singable since Dreamline?

The Larger Bowl.
And much of Vapor Trails was very melodic, but the melodies were idiosyncratic, complex, not catchy and singable.
Now I see what happens when I stay off the Archives and Rush forums for a few days. Can't believe I missed this, but I'm so excited!

And thanks Kotro for giving us the obligatory "the artwork sucks" comment. I'm sure you could do much better.
The last few songs are suppose to make up one long epic track.

The single art was better, yes.

Ooh a 7 minute song! *gets wood*

It also looks like they're going after religion again, always good fun.

You can set your clock by Epignosis turning up to tell us Rush aren't anti-religion.

I could care less about the artwork....The alchemy symbols are cool. There seems to be a lot of connections going on, from the past to the future. Steampunk theme has that old world flavor but with a futuristic twist.......One movie to watch to get the steampunk idea is the Disney version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the story of Captain Nemo and his submarine Nautilus.
Or Will Smith in Wild Wild West, those give you the idea of the Steampunk themes.....

I can't really get excited about new Rush albums anymore but this seems like it'll top the atrocious Snakes & Arrows. At least they can still deliver the goods on the live stage. I was just watching some live tracks from the "Time Machine" DVD and you have to admit admit that they have to be one of the best or the best sounding band from the seventies still touring.

I saw them in Rotterdam during the Time Machine tour, and they played some new tracks there. No need to discuss - pre-ordered and coming back to it in June.
