On Pa there seems to be countless threads about the distinction between "Prog" as a genre, and "progressive" as a description. Most recently there is a very interesting thread about how a lot of modern prog bands seem to just emulate the classic prog of the 70s without doing anything new.

I was wondering if you guys could give some recommendations of some good modern prog acts which can be considered as progressive.

Whilst I do listen to the occasional modern prog bands such as Beardfish and Diagonal, I find that when it comes to modern music I prefer the likes of The Mars Volta, Tool, and Radiohead. Bands that seem to sit on the borderline of Prog but are definitely progressive. But I would like to discover some modern bands which can be considered both Prog and progressive.

I also don't mind the use of retro instruments such as mellotron or hammond etc., though I would be more interested to see if any bands have managed to use them in new and interesting ways.

You've said it man, Radiohead and The Mars Volta are the first that came to mind; they're pretty successful commercially, and still are full of creativity.

Not entirely prog, more on the jazz/fusion side, BadBadNotGood is a band one should take notice. They give jazz an extremely fun and creative twist, with a whole background of ideas. (they're 21 years old!)

Par Lindh Project always get overlooked for some reason. They are not that retro especially on Vini Vidi Vici which is a refreshingly original modern symph prog album.

Hi,

Wow ... Djam Karet not even listed!

Way too much syncopated and overdone metal in that list for me ... but it's better than no list!

The 3 sister bands Nil, Thork and Syrinx are among newish progressive acts that I am absolutely addicted to.

Russian acts Vespero and The Gourishankar are both highly progressive as well.
