I love Prog Metal. Nothing else gets me going like Prog Metal. I have plenty of music from other sub-genres of the Progressive genre, but a lot of them I've only really listened to 1-3 times I'll admit, so I only have them because I'm a compulsive collector. However, there are certain bands outside of the Progressive Metal sub-genre that I LOVE! Like Yes, The Flower Kings, and A.C.T. I must emphasize A.C.T. for the purpose of this discussion as they definitely have a Prog Metal sound at times. So I'm wondering - what else is out there that I might absolutely love but have never heard of because their in another sub-genre on this site? So I pose the question to you: can you name some bands that are in other sub-genres but you feel have enough of a crossover aspect to them that they'd appeal to a Progressive Metalhead? I'll give a few other bands that I love that I feel fit this bill:

Haha I was going to suggest Haken until I got to the end of your post. Anubis might fit the bill; they're a bit heavier in my opinion than your average neo band.

Children of Nova are GREAT and somehow listed under Neo-Prog on this site
Also try Bubu - not crossover or metal but very dark and I loved that album due to my love of hectic dark music
Also try Birds and Buildings- again, not metal but crossover prog with heavy/dark tendencies.

Good suggestions so far - will have to look into these. Another band I love that I recently listened to that I feel fits this discussion: Profusion. Just thought I'd throw that one in there too.

If you are into Jazz try Exivious. They mix Jazz/Fusion and Metal and they are awesome (be prepared for some very complex music) Porcupine Tree might interest you. Planet X is kind similar of Exivious. You said you like Riverside so you should try Lunatic Soul. It's a solo project by Mariusz Duda. Maybe Neal Morse would fits your taste, I can be quite heavy from time to time.

I assume you know Queen's first 3 albums?
The 2 albums by Shawn Lane.
The Dixie Dregs, Bring Them Back Alive is a good place to start.
Saga can sound too 80's but the guitar of Ian Crichton gives them a metal-friendly sound. Worlds Apart and Heads or Tales are my favourites.

Actually, I've heard all of those. I remember liking Exivious, but never listened to them again - I'll have to dig them out. I like Porcupine Tree a lot, LOVE LOVE LOVE Planet X. Lunatic Soul kinda bored me to be honest. And I like Neal Morse's compositions...but unfortunately I can't stand his voice. :-( But these are all great suggestions! Thanks! |

It's not crossover, but TOOL is a great band, which has very complex time signatures, listen to their LATERALUS album.
Also STEVEN WILSON is a great choice, both albums, and I think that RUSH can be another recomendation, especially the 2112 album.

Dude, what kind of Prog lover do you take me for that you think I haven't listened to Rush?!! OF COURSE I love 2112!!! ;-) Never did try Tool, guess I'll have to now. And sorry, but I found the latest Steven Wilson to be highly overrated. Actually wrote a review about that...I had my hopes way up since it was #1 on the 2011 list and had Jordan Rudess and all and was completely bored by it. |

Well, TRANSATLANTIC has very long songs and has various rythm changes throughout their songs. Check them out, sometimes can actually sound as FLOWER KINGS (Roine Stolt is in this band) and MAGIC PIE!

I supose you already listened to KIng Crimson so I won't tell you to check them :P I think that you would love Gordian Knot, a project by Sean Malone featuring a bunch of musician like John Myung, Bill Bruford, Steve Hackett and much more and if you are open minded you MUST listen to Maudlin of the Well, it's simply one of the best band from the new wave of prog music

Let me throw Sylvan into the mix. They are listed here as Neo, but I think that they have a heavy alternative metal type tinge to them.
