Gordian Knot and King Crimson both probably fit the bill well. I'd add the Trey Gunn album The Joy Of Molybedenum. Definitely check out Tool.

Dude...seriously...have you seen what my screen name and profile image are?  And you saw that I mentioned I love the Flower Kings?  You might want to start prefacing your suggestions with "this might be obvious, but..."  Wink

Love Sylvan, and I did get a Gordian Knot cd - another CD that I remember liking very much but it somehow disappeared into the collection and hasn't been pulled out.  I will have to pull it out again now....

Thanks for all the suggestions!  I have some bands to check out...

Sieges Even's Navigating by the Stars is the album you want.

A lot of the newer neo-prog bands use heavy guitars but many of the vocalists are terrible. Mixed bag.

If you haven't checked out Jorn Lande's ARK project, I think you'd enjoy that.

Both of those acts are classified prog metal but have mainstream sensibilities.

And if you like jazzy metal, Cynic's Traced in Air is a must have.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

For a band this is actually in the Crossover Prog category try 3. Also Coheed & Cambria.  Maybe Fair to Midland, though honestly I don't find them all that special myself.  But others do.  Pineapple Thief perhaps?

And I would be remiss if I didn't recommend the latest two Pendragon releases, Pure and Passion, which added some metal sounds to their neo-prog.

I do like me some Threshold. Some of their stuff is great, at least.

Von Hertzen Brothers are crossover prog that once in a while goes to the heavier side. There might be a chance that you like them. I recomend the album called Approach.

Later IQ releases should be right up your alley. Also Arena. You can't really go wrong with all the recent neo-prog albums, because they've all been straddling that line. Marillion being the exception, because to me they've been staying with the same sound since '95

I just did a search on the main page done the 2000-2010 decade best of, and saw this album, Chronicles of the Waking Dream by Arcane.  I'm listening to the samples on amazon and it sounds really good.  Any of you familiar with it?  Sounds like something I'd like.  Think I'll have to get it.

I also was listening to Si Partie I by Nemo's samples, and decided to buy the mp3's on amazon (I love this form of instant gratification).  I'm listening to the first track now.  This is cool.
