At work it'll be some Sony/Panasonic micro CD hi-fi, in my car Sony CD system and, finally, at home I employ a proper, decent Hi-Fi set up (fantastic Marantz integrated amplifier, great Sony Blu Ray/CD/USB transport, couple of floorstanding award winning Tannoys and a handful of handpicked QED wiring). I only listen to the music from CDs, blu ray audio discs and high resolution files. No lossy files then - waste of time. Blu ray player is linked to the Marantz through digital caxial audio cable to omit its built-in DAC and use instead the fabulous Marantz' one. When I cannot use speakers I use reference AKG headphones.

Great set up. I would certainly swap them Wharfedales with Tannoys Mercury V4 though to properly complement your AS500!

You have one of the first Sony CD players, like from the early 1980s? I have always wanted to treat myself to one, but then I heard some rumors that they are not always compatible with the modern CDs (esp. CD-Rs). What's your experience?

Thinking of getting a modest desktop setup with dedicated DAC and headphone amp.  Would connect a small nettop running a squeezebox type server to stream files (FLAC) to the DAC.

Wow that is a hell of an all-in-one.  Thanks Catcher10!  Do you own this?

I do not....I have an audio friend in St Louis that does, he bought this along with the PSU and is just getting around to breaking it in. So far he really likes it......What I like is it gets you into the DSD and DXD realm for little money.

Understand I am not a big fan of DSD/DXD simply because there is nothing you and I would listen to in those digital formats available for download...There is some jazz coming and classical music, which makes sense..but not much else.

I also like that is battery powered so the noise level if any, would be inaudible...looks like it can charge your media device too...cool DAC for sure

I was initially looking into a Schiit Modi 2/Magni 2 combo, but this thing might have taken the lead.

Schiit products are good for the money also....the ifi is sweet thou

In the living room it's my Rega amp and Paradigm speakers. Streaming through my Roku when I listen to Ian Beabout's show it's my Bose home entertainment system. In the bathroom it's just a little iPod hookup box. In the car it's the factory installed Boston Acoustics system. When I'm working in the yard it's some of my old cheapo equipment I still had on hand and moved to the garage. Speakers placed accordingly so I can hear in the front and back.
