When you look at it, we're really a 'monogamous in name' package deal. We get to have our cake and eat it, too (with a heap of cream on top).

Strangely, I don't daydream about being mass raped and brutally dominated.

Especially if it involves cakes. Dead
Excuse me, sir, do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior, Neptune, god of the Sea?

Everybody has ignored my incredibly sharp point. We are discussing orifices now but this gets more interesting if the polygamous marriage is a gay one. Then we have a deficit of orifices and a surplus of penises which will then create quite some tension. This is the issue of the century.

Really, let's just allow everything.

I'm late on this debate, but would you accept that it goes both ways?? a woman having three husbands??

probably not, uh?? TongueWink

Unfortunately, most examples of polygamy generally are not egalitarian on the partner's rights! Beit Mormons or muslims

However, I agree that the thing about lifelong monogamy is over-rated - even the most monogamous animals have sexual/mating relationship with other partners (this is a fairly recent find), and the "need" for monogamy comes from the religious stranglehold n "family values"

^Again, this point about polygamous marriages being misogynistic has no bearing on the debate. You're pointing out a flaw in past execution of the idea, not a flaw in the idea itself. Historically, monogamous marriages involved misogyny and slavery of the woman.

I have no problem with a woman having 3 husbands or 100 or ten women being married to ten men. I would even go further in this debate. I would support something like a man being able to marry his dog (though it would be pretty meaningless), but I would find it rather strange and a little debase personally. I support homosexual marriage and I don't care what anybody chooses to do, but I find the act personally extremely unappealing. Not only do I support polygamous marriage, but I find it pretty naturally. Although I'm fully dedicated to a monogamous relationship myself, if I had never met my significant other I could see myself favoring a polygamous situation.

Really, society accepts all sorts of group relationships and associations of all kind. I'm not sure why accepting people living together and sharing responsibilities together as a group is any different.

I think because the ingrained attitude associates polygamy with sexual decadence and female slavery.

Of course. Because both things would be unthinkable in monogamous societies.

And at least one of those two is perfectly legitimate.

Or maybe it's just that polygamy can make the subject of inheritance a bit more complicated...

Of course, because that's totally reasonable and all. That's why I say that parents should be limited to one child. It makes the inheritance much less complicated.

I will let you study the problems of inheritance in the countries where polygamy is legal.

Nice how things aren't allowed because it makes some legal procedures more complicated...
