Mother-in-law received a letter today from "2010 Summer Olympic Lottery" that she has won £900,000 in a lotto designed and promoted by European Lottery, Russian Football Union, Qatar Football Association, and Olympic Online Lottery. It's run by "Microsoft Financial Security Company", cleverly registered at a bona fide address in London.

The English in the letter is utterly appalling, and a Google search reveals this to be a quite long running scam.

We, of course, were not fooled, but it is easy to see how some people might be.

Anyone else had this, or similar, in the runup to the (yawn) "big event"?

Yep, I've won in similar contests as well, with only the first really making me think twice about it.
"Dear David. We are happy to inform you of your winning prize of 9998977987987494698749654164 pounds in the London Kennel Club Lottery for Danes who fancy Krautrock and Mayo!"

How does the saying going now? If it sounds too good to be true, then buy 2? No no if it sounds too good to be true, then call your mother, and she'll provide you with a huge phone bill? Errm I'll get back to you Steve, I am kind of pooped here, I am just glad that you and your family didn't fall for these worthless attempts at robbing you off your hard earned cash by the über-scum of the internets.

No way? Can I have a poorly written letter from you so I have that in writing?

Yup. A few years ago I won something like 200.000 euro in a Spanish lottery. They were very sorry that I hadn’t won more and wished me better luck next time. When I googled "scam", I found exactly the same letter.

"Dear Friend,

I am an extremely wealthy but extremely naive and gullible man from a country you probably haven't even heard of.  I have all this money but it needs to move out of my bank account as soon as possible, or I'm afraid it will spoil.  Would you be so kind as to allow me to deposit this money in your account for a while?  I promise you can keep it, I have no use for the money and don't even know how it got there, but I want it to go to a good home.

Sincerely,
a guy sending you an email"

Happens to me almost every day-i don't even read them, just delete them (sometimes viruses are hidden in them, so you have to be extra careful)

Yes, I have been a target for such scams IRL. I've not, so far, been fooled by them.

SCAM and SCUM differ by one letter, and yet they are so much alike, aren't they?

Well what can ya say? Glad you weren't fooled by it but this isn't really new.

How many lotteries have I won from other countries??
A couple of African princes wanted to give me millions of dollars, all I need is to provide my bank account!

That's just the internet...for a month this "company" kept harassing me, insisting I bought these magazines and needed to give my bank account for it to happen.
A friend of mine got dooped badly and fell for a pyramid scheme and spent a week telling me how great it is. When it crashed he never did work up the balls to admit "I told him so" LOL

Scams are all over the place man. Vulturous too...the moment my home phone number expired from the do not call list we started getting a couple of scammers a week!
