Too easy - The Fountain of Salmacis for me every time! Possibly my fave Genesis track full stop!

Oh yuck! Salmacis and Lamia are beautiful creatures at least , but the squonk is really ugly one.

Generally: I think that here there was a confusion of terms, what's actually the proper name and what's the general name of any being. I feel it's the think ice. However, I'm not a great expert on mythology, also English is not my native language. So I apologize for this confusion.Embarrassed

Salamacis. I think it was my first Gabriel-era Genesis song.

I would have voted The Lamia except, as I think has been established earlier in the thread, it doesn't belong here.  As the songs lyric goes "we are the lamia of the pool .." It is the collective name for a group of creatures.

Harold the Barrel is my next favourite song on the list so it gets my vote.  I love the the dark humour of the song, the theatrical structure and some very nice melodies.  Get em Out By Friday developed the style on Foxtrot and again in The Battle of Epping Forest on SEBTP (though, IMO less succesfully).

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
La nymphe Salmacis by François-Joseph Bosio, 1826 (Louvre)
The Nymph Salmacis and Hermaphroditus by François-Joseph Navez (1829)

In Greek mythology, Salmacis (Greek: Σαλμακίς) was an atypical naiad who rejected the ways of the virginal Greek goddess Artemis in favour of vanity and idleness. Her attempted rape of Hermaphroditus places her as the only nymph rapist in the Greek mythological canon (though see also Dercetis).

In this context, rape means abduction which leads to ... well, yeah.  I voted for this naiad.
After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. ~Aldous Huxley

I vote for The Lamia, even if I think it shouldn't be part of this poll.

I've thought about it, but I would believe that Duke is just a peerage. Embarrassed I'm sorry, but I'm not knowledgeable in post-Gabriel Genesis at all.

Lamia is a name of mystical creature, a woman with snake's skin. Salmacis is a similar case.  I don't understand where you see any problem.Confused

Salmacis was an individual. It is the name. We don't know the Lamia's name in the song.
